1. Gettingi it back after lunch and will find out what the problem was. Edit - it was just the battery thankfully.
2. I ordered a book from the UK from a company that doesn't appear to use Royal Mail but another method where it goes via most of mainland Europe. I thought it had been lost in the post and a replacement was sent. The original arrived yesterday, in a large white sack with a security seal on it. The book inside was still in its packing carton and not damaged save for two strips of packing tape, so I think someone had opened it for a look. I don't mind them (customs?) opening it, but the delay in getting it to me after was excessive and now I've got to get the spare one back to the UK.
3. Thanks It had been running fine no battery or any troubles until this afternoon. As stated the lights and indicators etc work, the radio won't though now 'cause it needs a code [6]. I have looked around the battery and can't see anything obviously loose or broken, but then the underneath of a car bonnet is as unknown to me as Middle Earth. I will get the garage to have another look tomorrow starting with the battery and report back.
4. Rocking hasn't helped , so will replace the battery tomorrow and hope that does the trick.
5. the lights indicators etc work, going back to rock it.
6. The chap from the garage has been out and used jump leads to start it. He said to leave it running for 30 mins ( I gave it 40) and then restart it. It hasn't restarted. I'll try rocking it now and see if the lights etc work Thanks both for your help.
7. Not thinking, I started my car in gear and it lurched forward and stalled. Normally embarrasing but not serious. Now it won't start at all, dead as a dodo. The warning lights come on and then some go out ( have checked oil etc). Garage is coming tomorrow to take it for repair but would like an idea of what it could be before I get the inhaling of breath and shaking of head from the garagist tomorrow.
8. Errors happen, you win some , you lose some. I'm glad that, that goal didn't matter in the long run. Of course the German goalkeeper isn't going to say anything, neither would the English or any other country if they could have benefited from it. Sorry I don't buy into it's only cheating when it's another team doing it.
9. Makes no difference now. 4:1 and the German Team still look like they haven't finished.

11. Could it have anything to do with the fact the OP is a non EU resident? Checking visas, right to live in France, that type of thing?
12.    I used brew it yourself  uk shop to get the beer making kit from, and very good service it was too. Dog , on the site  http://www.brew-it-yourself.co.uk/beerbase.php if you are after the taste of a certain beer, eg fullers pride, they find something that tastes similar , woodfordes admiral reserve in that case. I have found what I was after in France now, thanks to the google links and some Coopers classic old dark ale will be en route soon [B][B] Cheers all
13. I bought a complete home brew beer kit from the UK,which is going well. Are there any online shops in France that sells UK beer style kits?It was worth paying the delivery for the starter pack but not just for the beer kit.
14. I agree with Mr CdL I'd be b***ered if I'd answer to a politician if I was one of the French team.
15.
I have been searching for years to find the perfect house.   I have found it online and have been talking to the agent though email up until now.  Matty
The house could be on sale with more than one immobilier and if so the photos etc could be different as taken by another agent. Some agents in my experience show flattering or cleverly angled photos (bordering on deception) just to get you through the door and others are more honest ( with ref to photos etc).  Ask for more photos if needed as it is not like you are in the next village. Have a look on pages jaunes for other local immobiliers and notaires or immonot and see if the house is for sale elsewhere. Don't rely on verbal assurances to your questions. Put them in writing and get the answers in writing too. I would do this before I got on the plane, to try and avoid a wasted trip. If the immo does think you are flying from Canada to see one house, then they will see you as a loaded foreigner [:-))]and you may to battle to get a lower offer accepted if you do decide to make an offer
16. Savon noir works really well I find and it's green.
17. Tranche à fondue is good I agree but more grainy than whatever bed steak is, hampe looks worth a try too.
18. According to French TV, it was never celebrated before for political reasons eg presidents after de Gaulle trying to put the de Gaulle (domestic years) behind them. The remaining veterans were full of admiration for Sarkozy for this commemoration as it has been a long time since they had been together and not likely to happen again.  The veterans also recounted tales of how they would dine out in London only to find that their bills had already been paid by British people, they had nothing but praise for the hospitality they received. I was quite dismayed by some of the comments in the UK gutter press in relation to this event, pity the ignoramuses hadn't read the SOE in France by MRD Foot,( difficult to find now but an excellent read)  before they let their fingers run away with their keyboard.
19. De Gaulle did far more good for the war by staying in London than he could have if he had stayed in France. There is no doubt that his speech did inspire and rally French men and women and I'm immensely grateful that these brave men and women took great risks in an occupied country not only to derail the German war machine but also to aid the escape of allied soldiers etc.
20. The village butcher we shopped at in the UK used to sell us something called BED steak for cutting into cubes for BBQ kebabs. I had never heard that term anywhere else before or after and only found one (not helpful) reference to it on the internet. I would like to try and get the same cut of meat in France, but I first need to know what it is ordinarily called. It was Bed and not best steak, probably a regional name as the butcher wasn't a local, it wasn't extremely expensive, but still quite tender. Any ideas ?

courgettes

Could they need pollinating? http://www.kitchengarden.co.uk/news/back-to-basics-courgettes
22. Add to that list, how long you have owned the house?
23.
Aside from the fact that some day his inheritees will eventually come into their share surely it is up to the father what he does with his property whether it to be to do nothing or otherwise. I would be pretty miffed if my inheritees were being expresing their impatience in this fashion.
The French inheritancy laws are different as I'm sure every one is now aware. It may not be the father's property in the sense that it is known in the UK, things change on death, that's the way it is. If people don't want to be bound by French laws they shouldn't buy in France.

Sad news

I think a collar and bell is a must for cats to give an early warning to birds .There are as has been mentioned , collars with a snap release mechanism that don't cost very much more than ordinary collars and it does let people know that they are owned and not feral.
