Subject: Major computer virus - this one is real!

Hi All,

I checked with Norton Anti-Virus and they are gearing up for this virus!

I checked snopes.com, and it is for  real
 http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/postcard.asp

Get this E-mail message sent around to your contacts ASAP.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY,  CONTACTS!

You should be alert during the next few days.  Do not open any message with an attachment entitled 'POSTCARD,' regardless of who sent it to you.  It is
a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which 'burns' the whole hard disc C of your computer. This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list.  This is the reason why you nee d to send this e-mail to all your contacts.  It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it.

If you receive a mail called" POSTCARD,' even though sent to you by a friend, do not open it.!

This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever.  This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday,
and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus.  This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard D isc, where the vital information is kept.

COPY THIS E-MAIL, AND SEND IT TO YOUR FRIENDS. REMEMBER: IF YOU SEND IT TO THEM, YOU WILL BENEFIT ALL OF US.

There's a lot of confusion here.  If you follow the Snopes link in the original post, if even has an exact copy of the warning message, but they are two different viruses. AFAIK, the virus that can "burn" the whole of your hard disc has not yet been invented.  It's an exact rewording of the old Olympic Torch hoax, doing a timely return.

As long as your virus definitions are up to date, you have nothing to worry about in any case.

Well in an ideal world yes, but there are still new viruses being invented and these can get through signature based scanners. Sadly viruses have been known to wipe hard disks, these are less common these days though and most viruses are the trojan type with the aim of stealing data.

Sorry Gary, nothing personal...( there'll be gossip [kiss] ).

Edit: It's hardly a new virus, the evidence of its discovery was posted on the internet in early 2007.  Any virus protection outfit that hasn't updated its definitions since then is standing on very shaky ground.  Norton themselves (ahem) list it as a risk level 1 (very low).
