French drinking

Further to the Binge Drinking post, I came across an interesting (though goodness knows how accurate) statistic the other day on the BBC web site that stated that the average young English woman between the ages of 18 to 24 consumes 203 litres of alcohol per year and that the government expects this figure to rise to 242 litres/year by 2007. Apparently, this is 4 times the alcohol consumption of similar aged Italian women. Did a bit research to try and find out more about European drinking habits but could only come up with the following for France, and it is a bit out of date.

Per litres/per adult/per year

1960 27.4
1970 25
1980 23
1992 17.7

If the downward trend continues, surely it will only be the Brits in France who will be drinking by 2030!

The first hit if you search on "alcohol consumption France" says simply....

Summary: A French study has found that the total cost of alcohol abuse beats tobacco and illicit drugs.

Another one says:

"France, where an ad ban has been in place since 1991, continues to have a very high level of alcohol consumption and is in second place in the Western Europe per capita alcohol consumption league."

And so it goes. I don't think the alcohol industry is in any great danger in France!

I'm pretty sure your uk figures do not refer to pure alcohol, unlike the French ones, so are not comparable.
I've found the following in the bmj which are even less up-to-date than your figures but give a clearer picture of that period:
"The greater alcohol consumption in France than Britain (18.4 v 5.7 litres of ethanol per adult in 1965, 13.1 v 8.5 in 1982) reflects a higher average consumption per drinker rather than a higher prevalence of drinkers and so does not further reduce the incidence of ischaemic heart disease."

I'll try to find something more up to date another day, if no one else can come up with anything.
