France abuzz over alcoholic 'cure'

Very interesting, Claire, given how many lives are destroyed (or taken) by booze addiction (including innocent bystanders and children). Wouldn't it be a huge breakthrough if Baclofen could "cure" addictions of all kinds (it is effective for cocaine too, according to the article/book?).

Interesting but I think the side comment,

Encouraging people to think that there is a miracle molecule is to completely misunderstand the nature of alcoholism

is a crucial one as alcoholism, and indeed many other 'social addictions', are very often just a symptom of something else.

Personally I only ever have 2 drinks: Le premier verre et le dernier verre [Www]

There was a fashion in, I think , the 70s, for treating alcoholics with antabuse. The effect being nausea if the person had an alcoholic drink. This was thought to be the wonder drug for a while, but then the easy way out, to still enjoy a drink, is to stop taking the drug.

So this could apply to the new drug too. Unless it's administered in delayed action injection or something like that.

Alcoholism is a very complex condition, and alcoholics are very cunning people .

Oy, there, who are you calling cunning?

I love my drink but I've been on the wagon recently for 20 days and then had a drink with friends.  Now this is the time of year when people pop in and you have a drink with them!  Difficult to abstain and I have succumbed.  But, New Year's resolution already in place!

Arg.............not easy but will not resort to the miracle cure.  I think all "cures" have to start with the "addict"!

I'd like to endorse that wholeheartedly 5-element.

In May this year a dear friend of mine died thanks to acohol. The illness she had would not have killed her had she not been malnourished and unfit due to years of excessive drinking. She was estranged from her son and the large and beautiful house that she used to be very proud of was reduced to such an awful state that a firm of specialist cleaners had to be employed.

To watch a clever, articulate professional woman disintegrate into someone who was lucky not to have died on the street is not an end I would wish for anyone.

I hope with all my heart that this 'miracle' cure works.
