richard51
Got that the poem is by William Dunbar and is called Done is a battle. The chorus Surrexit Dominus de sepulchro is also along the lines that "the lord is risen from the tomb". Can anybody translate the rest - google can't cope. NormanH
It's in Scots from about 1500, but very close to English of the period:This is almost word for word the first verse. Obviously I wouldn't leave it like this in a real 'translation'This is to show how close it is.Done is a battle on the Dragon BlackOur champion Christ confounded has his foesThe gates of Hell are broken with a crackThe sign triumphant raised up of the crossThe Devils shriek with hideous voicesThe souls are ransomed and to the bliss can goChrist with his blood our ransom has endorsedTHE LORD IS RISEN FROM THE TOMB
richard51
Many thanks. That is very interesting. Its a shame more of these types of work aren't more easily available in the current language.
