Holiday accom needed 5th August

Hi

Does anyone have or know of a gite free from 5-12th august or is anyone up for some spare summer income for this week? We are a family of 2+2 girls (well behaved) and thought we could book a last minute break, no problem. It's proving rather harder!

My hubby is an arty crafty type and very good at DIY!

Have lived in france years ago and have owned properties in Brittany and Normandy and we just love the place!

Hoping for replies, Jools

Tourists are not much in abundance here in Brittany at the moment, the roads are very very quiet so finding a gîte should be fairly easy. Try the local Office de Tourisme where you wish to visit as they will have many on their books locally or the local mairie as all rental properties have to be registered with them by law now.

All I can say is that it is chaos here in southern Brittany - south of Vannes, gulf of Morbihan - as the world, his wife, his children, grandchildren and both sets of grandparents have descended. It is a veritable nightmare ... but, we get to enjoy this beautiful area all year so mustn't grumble about sharing it for a few weeks. Suffice to say it is very busy.
In part no doubt due to the poor summer weather and cyanide gas emitting rotting seaweed in Northern Brittany!!
The one and the first beach to have the publicity is only about four miles from us but it has been kept very clean this summer with the big machines working day after day and trailer loads of the algae going to the déchetterie locally .My particular village has three beaches and all of those are pristine because they are not in a big bay which seems to be where the algae ends up. Roscoff is very close, just across the bay from us and if anyone wants a superb campsite try Les Mouettes at Carantec, not cheap but they have indoor and outdoor pools and everything nearby.

The one in the news with the 38 dead boars is, it is east of St.Brieuc a good 1.5hrs from us here. Plestin les grêves is the one around here that first brought attention to the menace because it is a big bay with rivers running down from the woods and fields above it where there is intensive farming and stock rearing.

According to an article I read this morning hotel bookings in Northern Brittany are about 50% down due to mass cancellations following the international publicity about the seaweed. For example the owner of the Hotel du Val said normally this time of year they would be full, but currently only have 57% occupancy.

On the positive side there must be some great deals around because of this.
