NormanH
A dreadful toll of people drowned along the coast between La Grande Motte and Valrashttp://www.midilibre.fr/2013/07/28/noyade-pronostic-vital-engage-pour-une-femme-au-grau-d-agde,739643.phpL’Hérault est quant à lui en tête des zones dangereuses avec 29 décès l’an passé. Pickles
And yet, again according to Midi Libre, people still ignore the red flags ... and get a fine of 35€ for their pains.
Val_2
Quite a lot of drownings and cliff falls here in Bretagne, one serious fall in my own commune last week by a stupid tourist ignoring warning signs the coastal path is not for those who are not seasoned walkers as it is very steep in many places and with nothing to stop a fall over the edge onto the rocks and beach below. Incoming tides in estauries are another danger whilst so many go pêche à piéd too!
idun
There will always be drownings, the saddest part of any of them are those that drown when going in to rescue others. We will never be able to stop people being stupid and risking their lives. Patf
Very sad. A young man from our extended family was drowned many years ago. Not here, off the Bridlington coast.
Pickles
And a few more deaths since then.In the last couple of days, and today, red flags are flying at many beaches in the Languedoc-Roussillon region because of storms.
NormanH
Yes two more near drownings locally yesterday despite the red flags...
SC
We will never be able to stop people being stupid and risking their lives.
Unfortunately many of those poor folk didn't know that they were being stupid and risking their lives. Although not everyone getting into difficulties at the coast would be in the same circumstances, nothing can prepare any swimmer for the strength of a rip current, for example.. Local people of course, may be more aware, having had brushes with danger beforehand. Steve
NormanH
Perhaps, but the recent cases have been of people wilfully ignoring red flags thus putting not only their own lives in danger but also those of the rescuers. The Préfet has called for Maires of seaside communes to fine those who swim when there is a red flag flying, but he didn't explain who would do it or how[:P]Visions of a sort of traffic warden wading into the raging billows with a piece of paper spring to mind...
