Your bird observations on line

Some LPO regional web sites now have the facility for you to create a log on and register your bird recordings on line. Your recordings are available to you at any time as a personal record and are also used to build a departmental record.
The Swiss system allows you to pinpoint exactly where each bird was seen.
At present only the Aquitaine site has English as an option.

They are:

http://haute-savoie.lpo.fr/
http://www.faune-aquitaine.org/
http://franche-comte.lpo.fr/
http://www.faune-vendee.org/
http://www.faune-paca.org/
http://www.faune-auvergne.org/
http://vienne.lpo.fr/
http://www.faune-loire.org/
http://www.faune-loire-atlantique.org/

For people in La Vienne, (86), that would like to use this facility in the future but find it difficult "to get their heads round it" I can arrange a visit to the office for small groups to have it explained, and at the same time meet a few people on the team who will be happy to answer your questions in English. Anyone that would be interested - please contact me.

Aquitaine site is great and I didn't realise there were some many French birdwatchers. We have a crane living locally for 5 years.

We have seen Pine Martins about at the moment.

Where on the River Lisle are the European Mink?

Beaver are in 24 but where?

Its a shame there isn't one in the Limousin.   The bird population here is varied to say the least.  Saw a pair I've not seen before the other day.  They were either Garden Warblers or Chiff Chaffs.  My Nuthatches are back and the Willow Tits are having a feeding frenzy on the sunflower seeds at the moment.  Not to mention the Great Tits, Blue Tits, Chaffinches, Wrens, etc.  The Nuthatches are my favourites.

During the cold weather we had a funny litle bird often in the yard. He was incredible in amongst all the dogs, just a few feet away from them.  He was there all the time sitting on their water bowls having a drink, then shaking his head.  At first I was frightened they would get him, but they didn't seem to take much notice as if they had got used to him.  If one did chase him, he would just fly up a bit into a tree or on the kennel bars, then down again.  If we went out the other side at the front of the house, he would sometimes be there as if he was looking for company.  There was plenty of food on the bird table.  Then when it wasn't so cold we saw him less and now he doesn't seem to be around.

I don't know if you can see him being stalked by Saya and now up in the tree.

If you can, could you please tell me what he is.  I know most dog breeds, but not so good at the birds!  What would he eat in the Winter?

I assume you are a very experienced bird watcher crazyfrog, in which case you will know how rare it is in France even in it's primary location of Haute Pyrenées. As you will know it's very easy to confuse with the Middle spotted woodpecker or even the Greater spotted woodpecker for someone inexperienced if not well observed.

In French it's called Pic à dos blanc and I hope that you recorded it with you local French Association, which was the primary purpose of my original post - to encourage people to assist with the local and National records, especially people with your knowledge.

Great stuff.

Chri,

Not that experienced, but very lucky on the day. A freind had spent nearly 3years prospecting the area for White-Backed so we knew they were around. 6 breeding pairs we think in the area. We were actually looking for Black WP but only heard them. We spotted Wall Creeper, Goshawk and Lammergeier in the same afternoon, so not a bad day all round. My other friend with us (big birding fan) had Ptarmigan and Golden Eagle the day before, but was only really interested in Alpine Accentor (which we couldn't find).
