Anton Redman
Domicile does not exist as a concept in French taxation. Their nearest equivalent is 'Centre of Economic Interest' which they use to target the rich who have property and businesses in France but claim as they have a large house in say the Dutch Antiles where they spend more time than France they should not be subject to French tax. You need take very clear steps to establish a domicile of choice outside the UK. The posting about resigning your London club and not having a grave plot in the UK was serious. The late David Niven, possibly spurred on by posters in Hollywood reading "Your Country Needs You - We Don't " returned to rejoin the British Army and promtley recieved a large tax bill for the years he had been working in the USA. NormanH
Nothing to add technically to the sensible and informative posts of Will et al, but I have an observation.A number of British people have been worried about the UK taxman for so long that they fail to be terrified of the French one.In other words if you live in France forget British definitions.
