Russethouse
We had these in a restaurant recently, I had never seen them before. They were tasty so I bought a jar in Waitrose, but apart from serving them with roast/grilled white fish has anyone got any ideas what they go with or can be used for ?Google isn't very helpful. Val_2
Gay can you describe these berries. Are they fruit or herby type things and what colour.
opas
Are they the same as capers? small , green and have a similar taste to a gherkin? if so we use them in tartar sauce or as you said any other fish dish, use them in your mixed salad for a bit of tartness or with fatty meat such as mutton/stewed lamb as they help with the fattyness. Russethouse
Val, they are green and about the same size as an olive or grape, but have small 'pips' in rather the way gooseberries do. They also come with stems attached which I think are edible too. From what I could see they are from the same family as the little capers you would have with skate etc but are much bigger. Freyjabear
I used to serve these as nibbles, as you would cornichons or onions etc. They are very salty though. Also nice in a salad with fruit: pear and walnut, melon and feta cheese, fig and feta etc
Pixietoadstool
Caper berries are one of my favourite things! Try Delia's recipe (follow the link) for Crostini Lazio - they are delicious! The link has a picture showing what they look like! Also the next link has information about what they are - capers are the bud and caper berries are the fruits of the plant.http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/r_0000001423.asphttp://64.233.183.104/search?q=cache:SSklQFQ06AgJ:www-ang.kfunigraz.ac.at/~katzer/engl/Capp_spi.html+caper+berries+what+are+they&hl=enValerie
Butchx5
HiHavent met the caperberry yet but I have had capers - regularly on pizzas. Also if you take the seeds from nasturtium flowers and pickle them (while big and plump but still fresh and not dried out) they make an excellent subsitute for capers. In fact nasturtium flowers and leaves are excellent in salad too - a very versatile plant.Helen
