Perhaps not quite at their level, but very well informed and readable Roger Pilkington .

Not only the 'Small boat' series,

 "In his "Small Boat" series, each book illustrated with elegant David

Knight line drawings, Pilkington never intended to produce guidebooks.

He realised that the great majority of his readers at that time were

armchair travellers. The boating content was liberally spiced with

tales of folklore and hagiology, for Pilkington's facility with foreign

languages enabled him to source all manner of remarkable waterway

legends and little-known ancient saints."

but his book on settling down in France which pre-dates most of the rest and was full of accurate observation.

My own choice of location was based partly on his advice about the local climate..
