Will2 Posted June 9, 2006 Share Posted June 9, 2006 As a non-European I have been wondering if any gite owners would find it acceptable to agree to an arrangement to let my wife and I rent a property at a reduced rate in return for work at the property. We are regular, bilingual Australian visitors to France but can't afford a decent length of stay - like 3-5 mths. We would, however, stay for a longish period like that if we could negotiate some sort of arrangement, from maintenance, gardening, renovations, caretaking, bookwork etc., in return for which we pay a lower rent. However, I had to pay tax on the value of the property not the rent received.I think I will knock retiring to France on the head and join the hippy trail instead.
