Is it possible on internet to find tel.number listing as you would do in uk by referring to a book?

You can look up private or business numbers. At least I hope that's what you wanted.

If you have a FT line, you should get a free copy of the annuaire téléphnoque for your departement on your doorstep every year or so.

If you want to find a tel number online, go to PagesBlanches and click on the relevant tab.

But you're right in a way Clair, because it was only through lookng at the Pages Jaunes website that I discovered that you could look at "annuaires du monde" and thence Royaume Uni and thence a list of directories on line. Which amazed me as I can't see that Directory Enquiries will last much longer at the prices they charge when you can jsut look things up on the net.....

When the various 118 & 212 numbers came into being UK/USA telephone directories (& yellow pages) were already online. They've been there for at least ten years.

... so it's surprising that directory enquiries has lasted so long and that it has spawned rivals.
