Oil based emulsion

Who on earth told you that and why?  Nasty smelly stuff and probably hasn't existed for years.  Get some good modern synthetic paint and wash your brushes in water.

If it's a question of porous walls, use a stabilising solution first - you would have to do this if using oil based paint anyway

If wall was painted with an old fashioned distemper which is an oil based water paint then I can understand the advice as being o.k. and you need to use the same type of prduct as the new emulsion paints are much stronger and they will cause the old paint to bliser and peel off.!!

To remove old distempers is very difficult and time consuming--i.e.washing off with water several imes.

It is necessary to find out what the existing coating is based on-either a distemper or emulsion.[:)]
