Single room pavilion style log cabin not allowed in our back garden

Been informed that single room pavilion style log cabin <20 square meters not allowed in our 2 acre back garden in the middle of nowhere. Went to avranches local planning office yesterday to be told that any additional habitable residence (size immaterial, problem was large number of windows) was an absolute non starter in rural normandy (heusse to be precise) wondered what other peoples experiences have been in errecting such summer houses / play rooms in france? seemed particularly strange as many local DIY stores sell very similar log cabin style sheds.

Mods.: Subject changed, too big.

thanks for responses, the person at Avranches who we presented the declaration prealable too, just took the picture of the cabin (which was 1 page of a 10 page document and did not include dimensions) to his boss and 5 mins later came back and said it was simply not possible in our region, size immaterial (I had specifically offered the dimension sheet before he left), he even said a garage no problem but not an apparently habitable building.

Is it possible that the land you want to put the cabin on is classed as agricultural?  It might be worth checking with your Mairie what is on the Plan Local d'Urbanisme . . .

I did read a while ago that someone had problems because half their garden was on constructible land and half was agricultural - and they built their pool in the wrong place!

Strange. Put one up for a friend in the commune of Isigny (same DDE) a few years ago. Did the same thing, took in the Brico catalogue, asked the Mayor's office if a delcaration was required. They said yes and approved it in a couple of weeks. Two windows in the front and two in the doors, in a rural garden next to the road. Have you been through your local Mayor, or direct to the DDE?

we may well talk to the Mairie again and if so we'll certainly ask about what is on the Plan Local d'Urbanisme, thanks

we originally spoke to the mairie last september who only had a problem because the veranda part (not internal space) took it just past 20 meters squared, we then went Avranches a couple of days ago to be turned down flat due to habitable appearance!
