Houses in Wood

Does anyone have any information and experience, incl pitfalls, of building a house in wood and any recommendations for construction companies or how I could find out more about it?

They look great from the outside but I wonder what sort of problems one might experience and if they are durable.

I am looking initially around the Bordeaux area or a bit further north  but may yet go elsewhere.

I'd suggest a trip to your local Maison de la Presse and a browse through the house-building/bricolage section. There are probably 10 publications that could be useful, including "La Maison en Bois" and "Architecture Bois & Dependance" as well as eco magazines like "La Maison Ecologique".

Don't underestimate termites as they can be very problematic in many areas of France.

If you are looking near Bordeaux there is a permenant exhibition of new build show homes at the Bordeaux Lac exhition centre

Thanks to all for replies. Am going to follow up on suggestions. I didn't know about exhibition - pity, because I was in Bordeaux a lot last year but not actively looking at that time - will certainly make a point of going there next time.
