  1. The Government have issued an Emergency Ordinance in relation to extending time limits for legal processes. In effect the time limit has been extended for a further 3 months from the date the emergency was declared, i.e. 24th March 2020. If the state of emergency is to be extended then the 3 months will be applicable from that new date. That is the nub of the Ordinance but I am no legal expert and have only paraphrased the advice that I have been given by an avocat.
  2. After much emotional blackmail and many emails my son in NZ has now played ball and we have his ID (Thank whoever is up there looking down) and the Notaire will issue an attestation of succession for me to collect the jewellery. However, how do I go down to Montpellier to collect it! Is the form required to travel sufficient to cover this contingency or if such legal processes have been deferred for a period. Any suggestions or advice please
  3. Idun Exactly that, all you say.......hindsight is wonderful, I wish I had it. Sue56 The hospital authorities took the jewellery and then passed on to the Tresoir and I have to prove succession within a year to be able to claim them. I only hope that the year has been extended due to the crisis
  4. Thank you both for taking the time to reply, I shall be in contact with Notaires France today.
  5. Please can someone give me some good advice. My wife passed away April last year in a Montpellier hospital and they collected all her jewellery which was kept until succession could be proved. I contacted a Notaire and duly started the succession procedure. The Notaire took details of my children and made contact with them. However one of my sons who lives in New Zealand refused to cooperate and would not send a copy of his passport. This has dragged on until a few weeks ago whereupon he has reluctantly now agreed. I have tried to make contact with the Notaire as I am now getting very very worried that time is creeping up and things might go horribly pear shaped, especially with the jewellrey which my wife wanted to go to our daughter. I have emailed and phoned the Notaire on numerous occasions but he for some reason refuses to answer all calls and emails. I just want to know what is happening. I am now at my wits end to know what else I can do as unfortunately I cannot travel to his office due to the restrictions in place. Could anyone please advise me as to what I can do before the dead line on the 22nd.April.

    Face masks

At present enjoying the summer in New Zealand, however I am scheduled to return to Heathrow via Hong Kong in a few weeks time. Buy a face mask I thought, just in case, impossible over here, cannot get one anywhere, mainly because they have been bought up by Chinese! My sister has offered to send some over from UK!!!!
  8. Thank you nomoss. Also travelling up to Eurotunnel by car 18th.Dec. and on to catch flight to New Zealand from Heathrow.........sleepless nights!!!!

  10. Booked to fly Easyjet Toulouse/Bristol Monday evening in order to vote. However it means travelling from near Montpellier the majority being on motorways and I have heard that lorry drivers are planning to blockade some motorways has anyone any information on this action?
  11. Just bought a small dishwasher from Ikea Montpellier, decided to fit it in today, big mistake, had to call on friend for assistance. However, what appalled me is that inside said dishwasher I found a large plastic bag containing 15 x A5 instructional use booklets, catering for every language under the sun. Now this is not your everyday 3 or 4 pages long booklet but each contains 55 pages and each book gave instructions in 2 languages. The total weight was just over a kilo, in addition there were other leaflets etc on how to clean, how to put together and safety instructions. When one considers that this is replicated throughout the whole of the Ikea appliance range it must add up to an awful lot of trees for the sake of expediency. Apart from not buying Ikea.....what to do about it though?
  12. Mr.Huge A very sensible question that deserves a sensible answer from people with the experience that you ask for. I too am having to fly from Toulouse to return to the UK to vote in December as all other airports near me have finished for the winter their flights to Bristol. I have booked a long stay car park on line at the airport which I thought very reasonable, however I too would like advice on an overnight stay on the way back close to the airport, and what better way than to ask the good members of this Forum (except some of course)
  13. For the last 6 years I have used Mondassur for lengthy trips to New Zealand from France. Not had to claim though, thank goodness. My age profile is 75+, no questions about pre-existing conditions.
  14. Martin Have to agree completely, I joined the forum for sensible, rational information and advice on living in France. How it has changed! I also miss your very valuable input on matters technical, but completely understand the reason for leaving.
  15. After the death of my wife is there a need to return her titre de sejour (permanent) anywhere?
  16. Thank you all so much for the replies, I am in a dark place at the moment but hopefully with time it will be overcome.
  17. Unfortunately my wife passed away last week and I am getting overwhelmed with things I need to do. When we bought the house we signed a Donation Entre Epoux so that she would have the right to remain etc. Presumably there is therefore no need to do anything regarding the house as it will be in my name. But is it necessary or advisable to retain a Notaire for other things, the only other things she owned outright are Livret A and LDD, but presumably the bank can sort that out. We also have an apartment in UK in joint names but I will contact a UK solicitor to sort that out. I am also shocked to find out that all her jewellery has been handed to the Tresoir Public for some reason by the hospital in Montpellier, do I have to pay tax on this or is it part of the overall valuation of her assets.
  18. Yes, we also had the usual Xmas goody bag yesterday from the Mairie. We are a commune of about 4500 so quite a few had to be distributed, but I have often wondered if this is a common experience throughout France or limited to those that can obviously afford to do it and generally limited to a commune size.
  19. Certainly not disappearing in my neck of the woods. Small town of 4000 and has 3 very regularly and very busily used pharmacies. Who said the French are hypochondriacs!!
  20. Thanks to all for the replies and thoughts, I have arranged for EDF ENR to have an inspection and quote, which should be interesting with my fairly limited knowledge of the language!
  21. Friends of ours have had a system installed for a year and are quite happy receiving around 2000 Euros so far. However I am not sure of the long term benefits of such a system, effect on the house roof, house insurance leaping up and all the various wires and meters having to be put somewhere. Could someone with recent experience give their thoughts on the pros and cons of such a system. I like the idea of it being a good financial investment, at the current rate at least, but the practical aspects of living with it I am not so sure.
  22. How he thought I'd have stashed anything in a hire car, just beggars belief!. Judith, With respect, why not! Wool over eyes and all that!!! Hire cars are the cars of choice in the UK for drug runners.
  23. I accept that if I sold my UK apartment I would have to pay CGT to the UK authorities and also to the French Impot, but as I am the holder of an S1 would I also be liable for social charges here in France?
