5. We bought a Philips from Darty, not the cheapest place around but it is worth taking a look at their site, they have a few different makes and models and info on each. Mine is not Multi Region so make sure of that if you want multi region. It is working very well and with the HD it makes the pausing of live TV possible too and as Dick has mentioned elsewhere it is great for tranferring all those treasured VHS tapes to DVD along with inputs for a DV Camera too, even an improvement in quality can be noticed.  Good luck. http://www.darty.com/ best regards Zak
6. Sorry cassis, I added the 'and topical bit too' to the heading, changing it back now.[:)] and you are quite right with your question..."who is Jade Goody?" best regards Zak
7. We just had this given to us by the SY.D.E.D du Lot..... Syndicat mixte Départemental pour l'Elimination des Déchets ménagers et assimilés. I am still undecided as to whether or not I should stick it on my post box? best regards Zak
8. Alongside that news story was a link to this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/west_midlands/5212788.stm I know it's a long way off but do you think the company concerned has decided to display it's wears in this way instead of flyposting? best regards Zak
9. "The Union Jack is for all of us, but the St George is just for London, isn't it?" Jade Goody best regards Zak
10. "The balance of our population, our human stock is threatened. A recent article in Poverty, published by the Child Poverty Action Group, showed that a high and rising proportion of children are being born to mothers least fitted to bring children into the world and bring them up. They are born to mother who were first pregnant in adolescence in social classes 4 and 5. Many of these girls are unmarried, many are deserted or divorced or soon will be. Some are of low intelligence, most of low educational attainment. They are unlikely to be able to give children the stable emotional background, the consistent combination of love and firmness which are more important than riches. They are producing problem children, the future unmarried mothers, delinquents, denizens of our borstals, sub-normal educational establishments, prisons, hostels for drifters. Yet these mothers, the under-twenties in many cases, single parents, from classes 4 and 5, are now producing a third of all births. A high proportion of these births are a tragedy for the mother, the child and for us. Yet what shall we do? If we do nothing, the nation moves towards degeneration, however much resources we pour into preventative work and the over-burdened educational system. It is all the more serious when we think of the loss of people with talent and initiative through emigration as our semi-socialism deprives them of adequate opportunities, rewards and satisfactions. Yet proposals to extend birth-control facilities to these classes of people, particularly the young unmarried girls, the potential young unmarried mothers, evokes entirely understandable moral opposition. Is it not condoning immorality? I suppose it is. But which is the lesser evil, until we are able to remoralise whole groups and classes of people, undoing the harm done when already weak restraints on strong instincts are further weakened by permissiveness in television, in films, on bookstalls ?" SPEECH BY THE RT. HON. SIR KEITH JOSEPH BT MP (LEEDS NE) CONSERVATIVE SPOKESMAN ON HOME AFFAIRS, SPEAKING AT THE GRAND HOTEL, BIRMINGHAM ON SATURDAY 19 OCTOBER 1974. Is Ms Goody proof that he was right? best regards Zak

17. Hi Ruth,         it seems that if you made your booking on or after the 7th December 2006 then you have already paid the extra charge. best regards Zak
18. Hi Tonshun,         I had the same problem with Tiscali/Alice, I had been on dial-up for 3 years with Tiscali and changed to ADSL, when the ADSL connection failed to work I tried contacting Alice by phone, their own contact on the web site and letter, for over three months I paid them each month for absolutely nothing, I even asked them if I could revert to my dialup. I had to use my Free.fr dial up as a backup connection which was costing me a fortune in phone bills. Alice said that I could not cancel until the 12 month contract was up in March 2007. In desperation I contacted my bank and explained in full the whole story and they advised me that as I was paying via my Carte Bleue I should Fax them (the bank) a letter telling them that I had lost the card, they would then stop all activity on that card and issue me with another and when the next montly charge was demanded by Alice it would be refused, so far it has worked and Alice has asked me for a new card number, which I am ignoring.  I am however now waiting to see if Alice want to take matters further and sue for a breach of contract. I have all of my communications saved (to and from) and as a lot of my phone calls were with the help of my neighbour she is quite willing to back up my number of calls made to the helpline with her own testimony. They (Alice) assured me all the while that they had a 'specialist team working on the problem' my main frustration was that each time I called we had to start from the beginning with the problem witch involved the helpline person going through the whole setup procedure. Sorry to go on but it is nice to get it off my chest...again! Good luck in your quest. I wish that I had the advice given to me that the previous poster has given re: the recorded letter, sounds a much safer option than mine. best regards Zak
19. Sorry to have started this. Tresco I removed my quote because the intention was not to upset anyone and it seems that by doing that I have upset you even more? I am not related to Bugbear. best regards Zak
20. I have recently bought a Phillips DVD-HD recorder and agree with Dick, it is great for transferring the old VHS tapes. One thing I have found too is that I can pause 'live' TV using the remote, I haven't read it comletely but the HD uses a small part to store the program that has been paused so that when you press play again the program starts from where it left off and it is possible to fast forward to actually catch up with the 'live' broadcast, someone has told me that it is pretty much the same as the Sky + box. It is also possible to watch a DVD while recording a TV program via the sattelite to the HD at the same time. Hoorah for technology... best regards Zak
21. Hi,      has the paving around the pool been laid yet? If not and you are having some kind of slabbing done it may just be a drain that will be fitted with a cover level with the slabs for surface water to run off from the paving once it is complete? best regards Zak

23.
Don't take it to heart, Zak - "How fortunate for leaders that men do not think" - it certainly has an element of truth, regardless of the author.  [:)]
Thanks Cassis, I am not taking it to heart as I can see the point that Tresco was making.[:)] best regards Zak
24. Sorry Tresco,       the quote was for the second part of the heading "that will ring true with many" as I had just been perusing the thread where folk were saying that they took no interest in politics etc in the country that they live in at the moment, if you did not know from who the quote came would it make a difference? Anyway I am not here for an argument, it was just a harmless post in a thread, but then I will bow to you as you are a senior poster here. My apologies. best regards Zak
