1.
No need to ban GPS.  Just make the buttons inactive while the vehicle is moving.  I had a pioneer setup in a previous car, and once the vehicle was moving above 10MPH the buttons became inactive, so it could not be fiddled with unless the car became stationary, at which point the buttons became active again. I think you will find that the problem lies with the fact that governments make too much money out of people breaking the law, and so simple measures like forcing manufacturers to have systems like the pioneer one, never get the light of day.
But Chief, that would stop the passenger from using it: I am mainly the passenger when we are going anywhere unfamiliar and I operate the GPS.
 2.
Free postage to France from this site as well, I've ordered from them recently and been very happy with them: www.bookdepository.co.uk
Yes, I recommend this one too: they don't charge postage and the books are often cheaper than Amazon anyway! The book I ordered last Friday arrived on Tuesday, which at this time of the year is pretty good going.
 3.
I am wondering if the original poster knows exactly who this person was as he is far more than a guy who wrote a few books. He was a critic of the French government and a fighter of human rights in old French dependencies and in particular Algeria. Actually I might have a look round and see if any of his books have been translated as he seems to be a very interesting guy who I would never had known about if it were not for this thread. There is quite a lot of stuff on this guy but it is mainly in French, there is a little in English and can be found by searching on his name in google.co.uk.
Very true, however I am French and live in the same region as this holiday home is to be found in and I have never heard of this writer either. As you say, Quillan, he does sound interesting and his contribution to the movements in which he was invoved was recognised by the French establishment, yet if the French of my generation have never heard of him, (and, I hasten to add, I have a literary university background) then I shouldn't think calling the place after him is really going to attract English speaking punters! I definitely think Font Remy should back down and apologise.
 4. Last seen in the area of Niort heading for the motorway (on Thursday) , so they could be anywhere by now, but are doubtless still in France
 5. OK, I'll do it in bits so if any one posting is deemed too bad then we won't lose the whole lot. Mum, Dad, three children . the 7 year old girl's surname ISN'T Granger, but fans of Harry Potter will know what I mean.
 6. "Boiling a frog" is quite right, a dark blue 306.
 7. OK, no naming and shaming allowed so I shall use very measured terms. Tenants of friends of mine have just done a moonlit flit owing three months' rent and leaving various other unpaid debts. They bailiff had been consulted, but now they've left the property there's not much point throwing good money after bad. The trouble is that we have since discovered that these people have a history of doing precisely this: running up debts and then moving on - first in the UK, now in France. They have got away with it so far because no one thinks it worth their while to get involved in a costly legal procedure. So if you happen to notice a W reg British car with a tax disk that ran out on Nov. 30th (PM me for me details) in your village, or on the local supermarket car park, you would be doing a public service if you let us know precisely where. You could, of course, also point it out to the boys in blue!  These folks have been in France long enough for them to  be required to register at the prefecture - previous addresses also on request.
