  1. Mental Health ??? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/3904943.stm French Jews 'must move to Israel' France has seen a spate of attacks against Jewish targets Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has urged all French Jews to move to Israel immediately to escape anti-Semitism. He told a meeting of the American Jewish Association in Jerusalem that Jews around the world should relocate to Israel as early as possible. But for those living in France, he added, moving was a "must" because of rising violence against Jews there. France's foreign ministry said it had asked Israel for an explanation of the "unacceptable comments". French Jewish leaders, interviewed on France-2 Television, said Mr Sharon's remarks were unhelpful. "These comments do not bring calm, peace and serenity that we all need," said Patrick Gaubert, of the International League Against Racism and Anti-Semitism (Licra). "I think Mr Sharon would have done better tonight to have kept quiet." "It's not up to him to decide for us," said Theo Klein, honorary president of Crif, which represents French Jewish organisations. Trend France has suffered a wave of anti-Semitic attacks coinciding with renewed fighting in the Middle East. About France, on one hand we see the spread of the wildest anti-Semitism there Ariel Sharon "We see the spread of the wildest anti-Semitism" in France, Mr Sharon said. The latest French government figures show 510 anti-Jewish acts or threats in the first six months of 2004 - compared to 593 for all of last year. In recent years there have been bomb attacks against a number of synagogues and Jewish schools in France. Jewish tombs have also been desecrated. Mr Sharon acknowledged that the Paris government had made efforts to tackle the problem. He added that France faced a new kind of anti-Semitism based on anti-Israeli feelings and propaganda. He pointed out that France had a large Muslim community estimated at less than 10% of population, or about five million. Hoax Mr Sharon said his advice to French Jews was that moving to Israel was "a must and they have to move immediately". Correspondents in Paris say this is not the first time that Mr Sharon has spoken about the need for French Jews to leave for Israel, but rarely has he been so blunt. "We have immediately made contact with Israeli authorities to ask them for explanations about these unacceptable statements," said French foreign ministry spokesman Herve Ladsous. There is reported to be irritation in France at the idea that life for Jews there is becoming dangerous - especially as the government has made every effort to show that anti-Jewish acts will be severely punished. A week ago President Jacques Chirac rushed to condemn an apparently anti-Semitic attack on a Paris train that turned out to be a hoax. But his haste only aggravated passions among many in the Muslim community who feel they are the instant scapegoats, observers say. http://tlp.netfirms.com
  2. Hi I think you need to take legal on the wording of the compromis. As you are not relying on a clause suspensive there could be other charges. Peter http://tlp.netfirms.com
  3. Hi this is not uncommon. I think all potential expats should be aware that there is no magical paradise. All locations have +'s and -'s that are not immediately visible. And moving to another country should be in the stress tables along with marriage, divorce, moving house, new job, death in the family, retirement, etc. As an expat in my 4th country (and with widely spread family), I've seen many follow the stages : 1)ecstatic arrival 2)joy of discovery 3)busy with visitors 4)review after 12 months 5)focus on the annoying -'s 6)only socialise with other expats 7)family disruption 8)hatred of all things in the adopted country 9)move on It is worse with families : Children in expat schools have a higher incidence of eating disorders, etc Changes in lifestyle (working / retired, city / country, high/low income, etc) are equally stressful. There are other more subtle differences in culture that can have an impact. Living in a foreign country is not for everyone, particularly without a good grasp of the language. I hope you settle well back in UK. Peter http://tlp.netfirms.com

  18. Hi I learned this the hard way. I started by using some stuff I bought in Sweden. It was a large almost full tin of marine varnish. Probably works well in -25C snow, but was not good in the sun. So lesson 1 : Local products are formulated for local conditions. Then I tried the 6yr Lasure water based product on my shutters and things. Result was pretty amazing. It looks milky in the tin, but dries to a very hard clear finish. And still looks perfect after 4 summers. And we have 300+ sunny days per year. Lesson 2 : What is expensive in the short term can be good value. Peter http://tlp.netfirms.com

  21. Hi Comparing new and used car pricing across Europe is subject to many factors : Company car tax rates National fuel price (may favour petrol/diesel and small / large engines) Insurance rates Local car tax (higher tax % = lower spec and lower basic price) Local engine size tax breaks (some countries penalize, say, engines over 2 litres) Specification (AC in the South, Leather + sunroof in the North of Europe) Service costs (My local Peugeot dealer charges about GBP17 per hour - perceived high service costs hit used car values) Market positioning (Citroen is priced below Ford in UK, but is seen as a more premium car in France) Market penetration (French makes have low sales in Scandinavia, so prices are lower to gain volume) Manufacturer market ambitions (In some markets manufacturer is trying to re position the brand, so prices change) Brand image (new Saab / Volvo are seen as volume cars in Scandinavia and have rather low prices - often cheaper than Ford / Opel) Available discounts Exchange rates (Manufacturers are very slow to change prices because they are locked into comparative competitor pricing and exchange rates can rapidly change) The only way to compare prices is to specify the car you want and trawl through new and used car prices in each country. Bonne chance Peter http://tlp.netfirms.com
  22. Hi it is rather warm here at present. My shade mounted electronic weather station says for today : max air temp 36C max pool temp 28C I missed the highest temps because I was out sailing during the afternoon. But I can't help remembering it was mid to late June last year when we started to get 40+C temps. What is it like in the rest of France ? Peter http://tlp.netfirms.com
