1. as long as the dish is still functioning it should be fine TNTSAT channels here http://www.tntsat.tv/L-offre-TNTSAT.htm choice of decoders here http://www.tntsat.tv/Choisir-mon-decodeur.htm#A11 about 100 euros for SD only models and 200 + for HD (and SD) capable Danny
2. NickP, I think you mean the Strong SRT6420...? is that right? If so, this is a TNTSAT decoder with access card as Martin already suggested as a possibility to receive TNTSAT and other channels from ASTRA 1 satellite [Www] Danny
3. No, you can call 1014 or go into an Orange shop. They need 7 days notice. Danny
4.
Having a simple and relatively cheap UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) to hand (or always in circuit) for those odd occasions when the power does go down and you absolutely MUST be online and/or reachable by phone for however long it is will completely negate any disadvantage of being VoIP only and buying one will definitely be cheaper than paying whatever the FT monthly line rental is these days.
Horses for courses but....that surely depends on the amount of money the UPS costs to buy and to run and also how long it can be used for in the event of a power cut. Some will only work for 30 minutes or so max. Enough to save your work and turn off the computer but not so useful if the power is off all day which has happened here a few times. Also, if one depends on the ADSL VOIP phone line only (by Orange for example) one is also stuffed if the modem/router malfunctions. No internet = no phone line and it could be quite a few days or more to get a replacement livebox. The current line rental is 192 euros a year. Probably cheaper than the cost of a mobile phone/contract and UPS combined. It also depends on the cost of one's internet package. Orange now do a fixed line and internet service combined including worldwide calls for 38.90 per month. No VOIP and no need for rented livebox. Danny
5.
Well he does not have a second line, only a few people do. But if you loose power the livebox it won't work and any phone be it cordless or corded will not work be it connected to the Livebox or direct to the phone socket as the phone.
That is one disadvantage of depending on the VOIP telephone line only. As Bill says, if one has a still has a traditional line (RTC in French ot POTS in English) then a normal telephone works fine, even in the event of a power cut. This does not apply to phones which need to be plugged in to the mains to work, of course. Danny
6.
Thanks Danny. Can you suspend the Découverte in the same way as the land line? Or would I have to cancel the broadband contract everytime?
You cannot suspend the decouverte One used to be able to migrate the broadband account to a dial up one for a time i.e. therefore no cost if you are not using it, but this is generally not the current policy. You need to cancel it in writing and restart it again when you wish. This does seem to depend on who you speak to and possibly how persuasive you can be. It is not a matter of anything technical. I think rather that this policy is now in place to put people off starting and stopping and instead making them go for an on all the time package (more profitable for them) which is less hassle (for them too) Sorry if that sentence is convoluted...
I have a spare BT Home Hub wireless router. Would that work?
may be difficult but https://duckduckgo.com/?q=unlocking+home+hub&t=i Danny
7. Yes, you can still suspend the landline but of course, you will still keep paying monthly for the Livebox Zen Package. There is a simpler broadband available Découverte which is a bit cheaper and you can stop completely when you are not there. Unlike the Livebox Zen package, this has no inclusive VOIP calls and you do not need to use a livebox. You can use any wifi enabled modem/router. It is only up to 8 Mb speed which may not make any difference at all depending on your line. Danny
8.
As I understand it, if I get a new French HD TV with built in TNT, that's connected to our present satellite dish, I can receive French TV(TF1/2/3) and by using a new HD  freesat box and (second?) scart lead I can get U.K. TV?
No, that is not correct. Your new TV will continue to receive UK TV if you connect the cable from the present dish. But, to receive French TV you need to either: 1 - connect it to a rooftop aerial which needs to be able to "see" - point in a direct line - to your local transmitter. Assuming it is technically feasible, this is the simplest solution or 2 - install another satellite dish for French TV as it is broadcast on a different satellite to the Uk channels. This would also mean buying a separate French satellite box. This is the next easiest solution. There are more complicated ways, as Martin mentioned, but these would mean more satellite gear/knowhow to install. Danny
9.

sorry Chico, Your post does not show any picture or text from the Orange site ...
Yes it does ... no problem seeing the web-pages here. Sue
it didn't earlier....it also said 'se connecter' instead of 'se déconnecter', so I assume it has been edited[Www] Chico, can you please tell us whether you are connnected/ing via your own Orange ADSL set up or via another connection? Danny EDIT ignore that, what you describe is normal for the Orange site
10. sorry Chico, Your post does not show any picture or text from the Orange site... Danny
11. As An0ther said in post 2, you cannot log out if you only have one (i.e. the principal) email address. If you want to be able to log out, you must create a second amail address. You will be automatically identified without the need for password. The button Clair refers to is only there if you have another - secondary - email account. To create a second email address, go to http://www.orange.fr/portail click on your name and then click on the box on the bottom left 'créer un compte utilisateur' and follow the instructions. Sid, the 'me deconnecter' button does not work if you have only one email address, you just get this message: Vous ne pouvez pas mettre fin à votre identification car vous êtes automatiquement reconnu lorsque vous utilisez votre accès internet Orange.  Allez à la page d’accueil Danny
12. Quillan, assuming the telephone number on your website is the line for your ADSL, you will get a maximum of  2Mb (maybe less) and even though your line is in a zone degroupée by Free, you will not get TV by ADSL as the line speed does not support this. "Vous bénéficiez d'une des offres proposées ci dessous Freebox Total atténuation élevée, l'accès aux services de Télévision de la Freebox peut être d'une qualité dégradée, voire se révéler impossible." As it says, because of the high attenuation on the line, the television may not work well or you may not receive it at all. In your case, no chance of TV by ADSL Info from degrouptest: Etat de la ligne : ACTIVE Code Commutateur Local : 11304QUI [ Fiche détaillée ] Nom Commutateur Local : QUILLAN Longueur de ligne : 5262 mètres : 6/10 sur 5262 mètres Affaiblissement théorique : 54.1986 dB [Estimation] Débit descendant ADSL : 1871 kbps (234 ko/s) [Estimation] Débit descendant ADSL 2+ : 2001 kbps (250 ko/s) Free don't do TV by Satellite so you are probably better off staying with Orange unless you fancy French TV from either Fransat or TNTSAT (from about 200 euros for a HD decoder+ card) Danny
13. OPTIMALE INTERNET is phone line (and most free calls included) and internet all in one at 38.90 euros. You have to call up to subscribe to this and there is a 12 month minimum engagement. DECOUVERTE is broadband (up to 8 Mb only) at 21,00 euros. You still pay the 16 euros line rental with this one. No engagement, cancel any time. With either of these you can use a rented livebox at 3,00 euros or use your own compatible ADSL modem/router if you wish. Danny
14.
I have a couple of questions though.... I assume I need to point it to Astra at 28.2E? People talk about "LNB skew". According to a satfinder website I looked at, its -16 degrees, but is this clockwise or anticlockwise if I were standing behind the dish looking towards the satellite? Anything else I need to know?
standing behind the dish it is anti-clockwise. At about 5 o'clock. There are three parameters to adjust - dish orientation, vertical and horizontal, and LNB skew. Using the the signal quality guide on the decoder menu, move the dish very slightly to get the highest reading for horizontal and then the vertical dish position. Lock the bolts/nuts to fix that position. Once the H and V are fixed for best quality, turn the LNB in its holder either way to improve further the signal quality. Then you are done! Remember that the reception varies between frequencies and this is more marked outside of the UK. The signal on 28.2/28.5 degrees comes from 5 (I think) different sats so you need to balance the reception between certain frequencies. So if you set it up for best quality on the Ch4 frequency group -10714H - you may get a less robust signal on another frequency group like the (mostly) music channels on 11307V. All channel info is available here, grouped by frequency. http://en.kingofsat.net/freqs.php?&pos=28.2E&standard=All&ordre=freq&filtre=Clear Remember that you will only get the HD channels if your decoder and TV are HD capable and connected by HDMI cable. Danny
15.

Yes you can buy your own Livebox, it cost's about €60 IIRC, so roughly a 20 month break even point. Bear in mind though that lightning damage is very common in France and after a storm you'll often see a queue of people outside the Orange shop the next day looking for a free replacement whereas it'll be another €60 if you have to buy it yourself. If you haven't signed up for the VoIP telephone service then you don't actually need a Livebox and can buy just about any other router which takes your fancy.
Thanks, I know only to well about the lightning damage , been there had that [6] I read on another thread that someone ordered a new line (Ligne Résidence Secoundaire) + broadband and they commented that they where under the impression that the broadband could be switched off the same as the line (I was also left with this impression after ordering it) and in reality they were charge for the bb even when the line was suspended. Can anyone tell me which is the case and if it is possible to suspend the bb also? €21 p/m is going to be unviable if I am unable to suspend it, so what is the alternative? Bas débit, Acces libre with booster, be a better option? Slower but better on the pocket? I think I will end up phoning the help line again but I would appreciate as much info before I call them. Thank you.
It all depends exactly what you have signed up for. It would be a lot easier to advise you if you let us know what the details of the order are. If you have ordered a basic ligne résidence secondaire, it should be 16 euros per month and you can suspend it . There are some small fees for suspension and restarting. If you have also ordered the 'découverte' broadband service, it is 21 euros per month. You cannot suspend it but you have to cancel it completely and then restart it again when you want. This seems to be the general current 'policy'. But....the reason there is such a lack of clarity about this is that Orange are not consistent. It seems to depend on which Orange sales person you talk to. They do not want you to cancel (salespeople on commission remember) so there is always the chance that they will tell you fibs if they are less than honest even if something is technically possible. Some Orange staff will say that you can migrate the service to 'accés libre' and then restart it again later. You can use any compatible modem with this service. Orange often offer a cheap ADSL modem (for sale, not rental) which may be the 9 euro bit... This will not be wifi capable. If you want wifi then you will have to get another modem/router to use. All of this should be clear in your order. Did you not receive any confirmation from Orange? Danny
16. Another possibility is that the OP has been sold an extra package of 2h per month of inclusive calls within France for 3 euros extra http://boutique.orange.fr/ESHOP_mx_ft/?tp=F&ref=3500&IDCible=1&type=3&WT.ac=1000636 Un forfait au choix (facultatif) : - 2 heures de communications par mois vers tous les fixes de France Métropolitaine + 15 sms pour 19€/mois Danny
17. An0, I assumed that macwad is trying to get French channels via the rooftop aerial "I have a TV aerial, but of course no French Channels since the switchover." The SHD 85 should function fine as a TNT decoder if macwad's telly does not have digital tuner. No one mentioned Sky dishes.[:-))] [:)] Danny
18. I am assuming that your current TV does not have a digital tuner. For the TNT channels, I don't think the SHD85 needs a connection to the ADSL at all. It should work OK assuming your aerial is well set up to the local transmitter. You have nothing to lose by trying it! It has a aerial input (labelled RF in) and a satellite input (labelled SAT) so it has a sat tuner and a terrestrial tuner too. I imagine that you will not be able to access the Orange satellite channels even with the card in. On the other hand, if you do also connect a sat cable to a dish which is pointing to Astra 1 for exmple, you may at least also receive other channels which are free to air (FTA) if not the Orange channels. You may need to dig around in the set up settings to get anything with both of these options if it does not do it automatically Menu/ mes réglages TV/OK/chaînes TV/OK/recherche rapide des chaînes also for the satellite channels if you have a dish set up Menu/ mes réglages TV/OK/chaînes TV/OK/ajout des chaînes en libre acces If you do connect by ethernet cable to the router or by cable to a sat dish, the box may want to update itself at some point. Let us know what happens. Danny
19. SP1 is the latest service pack for Windows 7. There may be an SP2 sometime later this year. Danny
20. it seems you have Windows 7 with service pack 1. try this, found on the web.... work-around is as follows: Right-click > Properties > Compatibility > Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 7 So as it is in French, right click on the Vistalizator program, choose propriétés/ compatibilité/ executer ce program en mode de compatibilité pour Windows 7/ OK and see if that helps. Danny
21. For what its worth, I can confirm that Vistalizator works perfectly on one (French) Vista computer here. It updates via Windows update no problem. All menus/items are now in English and it has been woking like that for over a year. If you want to try, there is nothing to lose. If you don't like it or want it, you can just restore the laptop to factory settings using either the recovery discs (which are recommended to make, if they do not come with the laptop) or hidden recovery partition on the hard drive. Then the laptop is back to new. Of course any personal files should be backed up elsewhere if a factory reset is used. Danny PS having the computer in French can also aid with learning the language!
22. Yep, Martin is correct, it is on one of the BBC red button service channels. It is channel 6712 (also called BBCi 2) on the satellite. That is the channel name, not the channel number on the Humax box. I don't know where to find any schedules for these event channels. Danny
23. The channel numbers start from 5000 but the order - and indeed which channels are available - depends on which frequencies you scan and add. If you do an automatic scan of all frequencies, free to air (i.e. not encrytpted) you will end up with a list much like the order of the channels I posted. Regarding the channel you were watching, I don't know what it was. Was there no on screen logo? Is there no channel name displayed on the front of the Humax when you watch it? If it is a channel number like 20735 or some other, ITV are running some test channels under certain numbers at the moment so it may be one of those. If that does not help you find what channel it is, while watching the channel, press menu then go down to systel and then diagnostics. The current frequency will be displayed at the bottom where it says tuner 1 and tuner 2. 11058 H etc... you can see what channels are using that frequency on the king of sat link I gave. That should narrow it down to less than 10 or so! Danny
