On a recent brief return to my old Vendée stamping-ground, I was amazed to see in my (now hugely poshed-up) HyperU store a range of those tasty Welsh cheddars that are encased in wax. On the other hand, French friends are always asking me to bring them Stilton; I have never seen that for sale in France. I guess the wax-wrapped "cheddars" travel/keep better.

Ha ha (or ah ah, of course, in French)! I love “divulgâchage” for “spoiler”.

We had a house rebuilt from scratch in 1990, using French architect and entrepreneurs. The partition walls (cloisons) between the rooms were made of that hollow, ridged brick stuff; the outer walls had similar hollow walls erected on the inside of them. All the walls were plastered by an artisan "plâtrier".

I see the Académie Française has decreed France should use "infox" instead of the current anglicism. It does at least have a snappier feel about it than the original suggestion of "information fallacieuse". Among recent suggestions that have failed to catch on, according to the Telegraph, have been "mobile multifonction" for smartphone, and "l’accès sans fil à internet" for Wifi. I wonder why...

+1 to that, Gardian. He always looked 94, though, even on the sleeves of the 45rpm records that my French boyfriend gave me in 1961.
