Why ?

Dontcha just love those occasional reports of demos etc where the press and cameramen outnumber the participants? And I wonder how many more ''committed activists'' turn up once they know the cameras are there?

Why ?

It never ceases to amuse me that the UK news channels seem to consider wintry weather in the winter or summery weather in the summer newsworthy.
3.
Nice row brewing up over the publishers' attempts to reintroduce retail price maintenance for electronic books. They are the ones trying to cash in. According to the press, the hike in price of electronic books has spawned a lot of pirating
The Net Book Agreement was outlawed a quarter century ago yet it has effectively resurfaced for ebooks.  Amazon, for example, must sell ebooks at the price determined by the publisher rather than in competition with other sellers.  So what we have now is really an eNBA.
4.
In case anybody missed this, there's a "12 days of Kindle" sale on at the mo'.  Lots of stuff for 99p or so.
The consensus on the Kindle forums seems to be that this has been a disappointing sale with very few books by established authors available.  Certainly I have found only 2 books this time but last year must have spent about £20 to get 10 or 15 really good books!   There's always a lot of free books and very cheap ebooks available an Amazon and in amongst the total dross there is the occasional gem.
5. Sometimes the ash gets removed from our Jotul F3 daily, other times I 'forget' for a few days by which time the ashpan is overflowing.  I have not noticed any difference in the way the fire runs whether there is a collection of ash or not.
6. When it blows really hard we move into the downstairs bedroom which is very quiet. At least we can sleep without listening to the maelstrom in the roof. Then out with the dog in the am to check the damage (none this time, thank goodness).
7. Here in 71 it's windy and wet but not as severe as predicted, although we are supposed to have heavier rain this afternoon. No sign of any damage, flooding or trees down yet.
8. If the only contact is the annual Xmas card, are they really friends?
9.
I dont understand why you have that problem. My kindle, registered (and originally delivered) to my brothers address downloads quite happily to our house here. I just hope the new one will do the same, though it needs wifi rather than 3g ( havent a clue what the difference is but it was a lot cheaper)
A 3g Kindle will connect either to the wifi router or the 'phone signal - whichever is stronger.  With 3g you are talking to Amazon via the 'phone network and this seeems not to be monitored for geographical location; however, when connected via wifi and talking to Amazon, the Amazon server can detect where the device is located.  This has been covered on here before but it would seem that those that get blocked from .co.uk are using wifi for ordering.
10.
I have a Kindle K 3G and when I download books I go to my garden which is about 5 minutes by car, in order that Amazon does not detect a French IP address. However I would like to buy a Kindle without the keyboard for my wife because she hogs mine all the time!! How can I transfer the books I have downloaded to mine onto her Kindle. The proposed Kindle would be registered in my name as a second Kindle at a UK address. I understand that obviously the books she would like to order can be delivered through me to the second Kindle, but what about the ones already on mine?
All the books you have already bought and downloaded are held by Amazon in your Kindle library.  Go to your Kindle account on Amazon and you will be able to direct that each be sent to the new Kindle.  As long as the new Kindle is registered to the same account there should be no problem. The easiest way to access your account via computer from a UK IP address is to use a VPN such as expatshield (which is free): http://www.expatshield.com/ One thing to remember if you use expatshield on the computer is that the banner advert at the top of the page needs to be closed each time you go to a new page as it can overly the underlying info.  The new Kindle can be connected to the wifi anytime after you have told the library to transfer the books to the new Kindle (you don't have to have the new Kindle on the wifi when you are asking the library to xfer the books).  It seems that Amazon will deliver quite happily to a Kindle even when it's on a foreign IP address - it is the address of the device on which you make the order that matters. Using Expatshield would also allow you NOT to have to drive 5 mins to do your ordering!
11. I wonder if those that operate under the Autoentrepreneur scheme will remain exempt?
12.
JK I bet you would really look forward to that treat when you were young, and that is not sad at all, even looking back on it it shouldn't be.
It certainly made a break from shinning up those chimneys.
13. Back in the 60s, on a very special occasion, we would get into Dad's Ford consul, 3 of us, joined by the family next door, all 5 of them and rattle off to Guiseley in our best clothes - suits and ties and everything.  Once a year if we were lucky.  What a dreadfully sad life!
14. To Harry Ramsdens, fish and chips might be their bread and butter but it's not my cup of tea.
15. Is it true?  Or just a load of codswallop?
16. If anyone can work 'haddock fillet with mushy peas' into one of these puns I shall be well impressed.
17.
Perhaps the DM advertisment for the UK? Watch the video at the end , it is a bit special but nasty. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2067265/Transport-police-make-arrest-tram-passenger-hurled-vile-abuse-onlookers-racist-rant-toddler-perched-knee.html
My, My.  Is that the way the BNP usually electioneers?
18.
Anyone know how to make champagne sorbet ?
Stick a bottle of Cremant in the freezer?
19.
Would you believe it, logged on today and my email just downloaded itself into OE with no problem and no password required........ [:D]
Very occasionally, maybe once a year, we find the same thing with Windows Mail.  We have 4 accounts, 3 will download but login and password is asked for the 4th.  Ignore this and the email will not be retrieved.  But after a few hours - no problem.  It's an odd one isn't it?
20. I honestly think the reason for banning the use of mobiles in petrol stations is simply because they can or, even when something is patently nonsense, so-called safety regimes become an act of faith untouchable by fact or truth.  I rather suspect that the demand to switch off a kindle on an aircraft is again one of those things that are done simply to empower the crew and validate the notion that we are part of some technically delicate operation - if it's that labile then maybe we should travel by ship!

The M25

The M25 may be trying at times.  Imagine that it had not been built.
22. I say yes.  Seems to me that they will play the beast with 2 backs anyway.  I think the biological imperative is pretty much independent of environment.  If you are open with the kids then there is a better chance that they will be open in return, plus it makes their sex life somewhat more formalised which might in turn imbue a sense of responsibility.   On the other hand if one wants to perpetuate the fallacy that one's daughter would simply never do such a thing then say no.  I'm sure there is a car back seat or alleyway somewhere that will act as a suitable alternative venue.
23.
Anyone had a problem with their Kindle after it passed through airport security or is it just the DM? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2063587/Amazon-Kindle-scrambled-airport-X-ray-machines-say-travellers.html
Never had a prob.  Could it be foreign machines that come over here and take the jobs of our machines and cause cancer?
