1. Nectarine - Thank you for you reply . I have tried both methods- both the long version and the short version and unfortunately neither of them have solved the problem. I am still getting the pop up svchost.exe error. I have to click on it several times to get it to go and then it comes back when I try to start a programme or connect to the internet. Ernie Y - System restore does give me several restore point options but when I confirm a date and click "next" , system restore just does not want to play ball. I have this problem both in normal mode and also if I boot up in safe mode. In booting up by pressing F8, I also get the option to start up the last good configuration, but that does not work either! Any more help would be much appreciated!  It seems like the system restore option has been somehow blocked or disabled?
2. Hello I hope someone can please help me. When my home PC boots up I get a svchost.exe application error with the following message " The instruction at "0x75606eb5" referenced memory at "0x00000008". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK terminate the problem. When I click OK the box eventually goes but I can't acess any of my programmes. I cannot access the internet or anything else from that computer now so I am using this laptop to ask the forum if anyone can help? My husband is in the UK and I cannot contact him by email as it seems to have blocked my internet access. I am using the next door neighbours laptop which is not exactly convenient ! I have tried to restore my pc to an earler date but the system won't allow it to happen. Any ideas what I can do to solve this please? By the way I have run my AVG scan and it hasn't found a virus, BUT the problem occured after my grandchildren had been on the computer.
3. I thought that French Nationality can be applied for after 5 years of residency in France, so the OP's daughter would not have to wait until she was 18 ? Now that the gendarmerie in France is no longer a part of the military, perhaps acceptance/entry may be easier?
4.
If the wires have actually been run in modern gaine it is likely the earth maybe lurking there somewhere, just inside the ceiling, since, generally you would always pull 3 wires to a light fitting, just in case a metal fitting is used.   If they are in gaine, but only the two wires, it will be virtually impossible to pull an earth through it.
One should never try to pull in another wire with existing wires already in situe, as it just burns the insulation off of the existing wires. If the gaine that feeds the light goes to a local junction box that you can locate, then it is normal practice to pull out the existing two wires ( attach a dra wire first !), and then pull in three new wires ( phase neutral and earth).
5. I suspect that maybe the OP is not actually using pure chaux, but one of the ready mixed derivative products "pret à l'emploi " made by Saint Astier, specifically for pointing/rendering ? I hope I am right otherwise he could have a problem [:)] Other manufactured products made for pointing that contain Chaux are made by Weber and Broutin and Lafarge ( Parexi) etc.
6.   Thank you everyone for such quick and helpful replies !  [:D]
7. When I have ordered something from a shop and they say it will be in on "Friday", I often find myself in that area on the thursday beforehand and so when I call into the shop to see if the item has arrived early I never quite know what to say . So how would you say in French " I was passing by and called in on the offchance that  .............you could check my lights ..........the part I ordered has come in earlier .......................that could could fit me infor an appointment now .................etc etc...?" Thanks for any useful phrases on a similar vein.
8. Thank you everybody for the input so far . Big Mac I have sent you a PM. If anyone else has any more information it will be gratefully accepted.
9. Thanks - that's nice to know but does anyone have an answer to my question !? I just want a rough price for natural Spanish slates per m2 please? Any takers ?
10. No I think I said slates in my post ?
11. Hi, has anyone recently had a quote for a new slate roof and could indicate how much we should expect to be paying per m2 ? I don't want to waste anyones time in calling round artisans to quote as I have no idea if we can afford it or not yet. We have around 90m2 of roof to do. Apparently our rafters are Ok and fairly straight and our neighbour Henri (French), seems to think that we just need re- battening and slating . The existing slates are nailed to the roof and he says we need new slates and battens fixed with crochest ??? Any help much appreciated.

13. Bugbear - Please accept my apology for the name calling [kiss]  I'm sorry but I am not able to go further with any details about the case but I am glad the thread has answered my questions in full.
14. I knew that there would be one judgemental pillock who has no idea of the circumstances or the situation of the loss of points [:@] (I won't go there but 6 of the lost points were not me driving!). The other two were for a radar when I was going 105 in a dual carriageway that I thought was a 110 speed limit - Guilty as hell for that one I admit. I would like to thank the others who replied directly to the actual question and it seems like the points are rolled back three years from the date of the last infraction. I have just enrolled on a two day stage de sensibilisation to recuperate 4 points at a cost of 250€ and have no gripes at all - in fact I'm looking forward to it. Thanks very much for the (mainly) constructive and helpful replies !
15. Can anyone help me with a couple of questions please? I recently lost 2 points on my french license and have just had the legal letter notifying me that I only have 4 points left. I have read the letter and am not clear about the period it takes to get my points back. It says that three years must pass to get your points back, but........ My first loss of points was over two years ago, so does this mean that I now have to wait three years to get all my points back, or will the other 6 points that I lost 2 years ago come back this year ??? I suppose what I am trying to ask (badly) is ; By having this latest infraction, does it mean that all my points are re-set to 3 years??? I hope not. 2nd question ; Has anyone any experience of going on the course to get points back, or any information? How much , what is involved, how long does it take, can I get back all 8 that I've lost? Thanks in davance for anyone who can help me here.
16. Hello Jimmytaktak, That's a nice offer. Here's a question for you. Is the Gendarmerie now no longer part of the military but part of the French Government ? Why do you only see Gendarmes with radars on sunny days and not when the weather is bad ?
17.
I cannot understand why a loft based none presurised tank containing perhaps 250 litres is any more dangerous that a mains presurised cold water feed
I can......... Well if my house was vacant and the mains stopcock was off, then with a mains pressured French system the most water I would have to deal with would be a few litres in the event of a burst pipe. With a loft based water storage tank, if there is a burst in one of the pipes coming out the tank then you are going to get 250litres plus (or more) of water damage - enough to bring down ceilings and do a lot more damage. I would also mention that if an English system is installed it is likely that Uk sourced copper pipe, and soft soldering has been used,- two combinatons that give a muc weaker joint in the event of a freeze.
18. I thought that loft storage tanks are obligatory under Uk plumbing rules as there has to be somewhere for plumbers to have a slash under health and safety rules.
19. I've never heard of "Mille Stocks" but they sound very much like the other national chain of shops selling liquidated stock and such like called "NOZ". I remember finding some lovely red Bordeaux wine in our local Noz that nobody was buying because  it was specially sourced and bottled for Tescos in the Uk, and so the labels were all in English which must have frightened off the French !
20. There is no real answer to the question because the supermarkets are constantly having "promos" and unless you are really on the ball and constantly read through all the publicity that comes through the post you can never really be sure. You also need a lot of time to visit stores such as Netto, Leader Price, Lidl and your local supermarket, so fuel costs can also be a consideration for some. We have also noticed that some items that we buy week in /week out vary in price from one week to another ! It can also depend on store loyalty cards especially if you are a resident here. As an example, we were pleasantly suprised on our recent visit to one of the big chains that we have now accumulated 75 euros to pay for our next shopping bill, all done on points over the year, something to bear in mind if you shop in the "cut price" superamarkets which often don't have these schemes in operation. It never ceases to amaze me that our French neighbour who is retired, actively seeks out the cheapest items spending hours driving around to save a few cents, and then comes into our local Bar Tabac and spends 25 euros on fags and downs a couple of ricard every day but hey, everyone to their own ! [+o(] And finally check you receipts! It is common practice we have found that the shelf price does not always correspond with the till price[:@]
21. Well surely it depends on which country you live in ? Grim it may well be for some but those of us who live in France and earn our living here may see this news as absolutely fantastic [8-|] It is great to see our Euro going further when we spend in the Uk especially this Christmas. I can't wait for parity 1:1
22. I had terrible problems with a laptop that I bought at auction which someone had used for viewing all sorts of porn sites and other stuff and it was full of Malware and rubbish. It had hundreds of pounds  worth of great software on it so I couldn't scrub the hard drive completely. I suggest you do what I did and go to "geekstogo.com" and post your "hijack this" log. The people there will give you instructions to clean all the rubbish off of your PC and if you stick with it you will be amazed at how much faster and efficient your PC will become! First link is theire home page and 2nd link is where you post your hijackthislog for analysis. http://www.geekstogo.com http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Malware-Removal-HijackThis-Logs-Go-Here-f37.html
23. Thankyou - I assume from the replies then that I do not need to fill out section 9 (certification) then ?
24.   Has anyone renewed their passport recently from France ? Do you need to get the photos certified on the back by someone like a Doctor?  How on earth do you write the text they require all on the back of the photo ?! Any tips or advice, from anyone who has recently renewed theirs?
