1.
The man in the white coat agrees with you.[:)] All shutters should be removed in order to eliminate house breaking and burglary.
I think you are missing the OP’s point. Leaving your shutters closed is an advertisement that ones house is empty, as the OP states ‘What an invite to burglars’. I do not think that closed shutters would be any deterrent at all. I must say that this rule applied to our insurance and worried us while we were away for some weeks.
2. According to Advantage, their Advantage Multi for dogs prevents most things except ticks and earmite but Frontline plus covers just ticks and earmite.   http://www.advantagemulti.com/compare.cfm   So what do you do if you want total protection in problem areas, use both?   I too have had problems in the past using Advantix ( is this the same product as Advantage?) but I need something for heartworm, there is Advocate but not too sure this is available in France. Incidentally does anyone have the French for heartworm? The nearest I can come up with is ver de cœur but I suspect there is a more correct word.
3.

I'm not sure if O'Leary is serious or not. I think he is beginning to sound increasingly desperate though. Hoddy
It's a publicity stunt, along with the idea of taking out two of the toilets, charging for the third (I nearly wrote turd) and fitting more seats. The B737-800 is somewhat over the size limit for single pilot operations (12.5 tonnes?) and apparently if one wished to put in more than 189 seats, another escape per side would be required to meet evacuation certification requirements.
Ryanair First Officers will now know how much their boss values and respects them. Incidentally, single pilot max take off weight is 5700kgs. So as Pickles says,  overweight for single crew operations for the B737-800 One toilet for about 180 or so passengers, lovely if you have to join a long queue with Delhi belly. What a cheap and pathetic publicity stunt.
4. Thank you for your replies. I have found this on the Ouest France website: http://www.ouestfrance-auto.com/stop-arnaques/ It gives advice, and fraudulent telephone numbers, names and email addresses. This may help to confirm definite scammers.
5. For your info, one was a scam. I have just read Clair's 'Scam Warning' in the gite owners forum. My message had the same telephone number prefix 00225......... What to these people hope to gain? What is wrong with them?
6. Sadly, I have to sell my car; I advertised it in Ouest France. Immediately I have had replies via Ouest France and not directly to me, my telephone number is listed in the ad. They give mobile numbers and email addresses of hotmail and yahoo, not your usual Orange, Alice etc. I must sell my car but I am suspicious. Does anyone have any experience or advice please?
7. Thank you all for your replies. Where? A remote part of dept.22. I do not like the idea of a house sitter, the thoughts of a perfect stranger occupying my house, mounting up at my expense the electric and water bills to name but just two could be too much to bear but thanks for the advice anyway.   [8-)]

Care of dogs
Can anyone advise me regarding the legal duty and care due to a dog. I ask as a near neighboour has just aquired a young dog. It can be no more than three months and it is tied up in the garden in this torrential rain without a kennel or any bedding or shelter. Surely this cannot be allowed. Dusk is coming on and the temperature is dropping. Is there anything that I can do?
SWEEPER, Are you really an animal lover! I think not. All words no action. You should be ashamed. You have only responded once to several replies to your original request. IF YOU WERE REALLY concerned about this poor dog’s welfare, YOU SHOULD HAVE TAKEN HIM FROM that garden by any means and looked after him yourself until the authorities were notified and not to worry about the consequence. After all what do think would happen to you looking after a poor neglected animal, guillotined?
9. I am planning a long holiday and not knowing the ‘rules’ can anyone give advice or information please?   I am having difficulty finding out if La Poste offer a service to hold all mail at the post office. Has anyone used this service if in fact it does exist? (I have no address to divert mail to and no one that would empty my mail box).     Is it advisable to notify my local gendarmerie of my absence?   Does the house insurance company need to be notified?   Thank you.
10. The CA’s Gold Carte Bancaire insurance sounds good but how much cover will they give? They possibly won’t cover for a serious accident in the USA for example but the cover maybe adequate for a week’s package to Spain. I am always a bit doubtful about insurance companies when it comes to making a claim. Many years ago we missed our flight home due to my husband falling ill on the day of our return. The local doctor diagnosed food poisoning. Missing our flight plus a couple of extra nights accommodation was expensive but our claim was thrown out by our insurers because the doctor did not state that hubby was unfit for travel, pretty obvious but not in writing. Oh well, something to remember next time.   Thank you all for your points and suggestions.   Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone.   Betty.[kiss]
11. Thank you AnOther, Looking through various companies, Trailfinders seems to be reasonable but I am yet to find out if they will insure a non UK resident. Betty
12. Being 70+ I am having difficulty finding worldwide travel insurance. UK companies I have contacted will not insure overseas residents and understanding the small print of French insurance companies is not easy for me. If this is not an infringement of the forum’s code of conduct, can anyone make any recommendations please?
13. When leaving or returning to France from a non EU country, does the 6 month wait after the blood test result apply?   I think this rule only applies when entering the UK but I am not sure.   Help please.
