DOES ANYONE KNOW IF IT'S POSSIBLE TO CLAIM EXEMPTION FROM TAXES FONCIERES FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME IF I HAVE FINISHED RENOVATING A HOUSE IN CHARANTE MARITIME. I SEEM TO REMEMBER READING SOMETHING ABOUT THIS IN A "BUYING A HOME IN FRANCE" BOOK SOME TIME AGO .(OR DID I JUST IMAGINE IT)

According to the book that you mention, new houses AND restored buildings used as main or second homes ARE exempt from property tax for two years from 1st January following the completion date.

HOWEVER another book that I have, which is more recently published by a group of financial advisors, states that it applies to new build houses but there is no mention whatsoever of restored buildings. 

Talk about conflicting advice.

As John has said, nip along to the Mairie and ask them.

I think Stuie is probably referring to the exemption from tax fonciere that applies for two years to newbuild construction but not to renovations.
