Hi. We live in Charente Maritime near Royan and we are planning a trip down to the Languedoc coast.  We are thinking of coming down through Carcassonne, turning right at Narbonne, through Perpignan and on to Collioure.  We plan to base ourselves at Collioure and explore from there. Has anyone any suggestions as to what we should see as this area is totally new to us. We would like to venture into Spain whilst we are there. Any suggestions welcome. Many thanks.

Some sites to help:

Hours of interesting reading, and not based on selling you something

At the least look at

To whet your appetite there are lovely photos of the region at

to get a 'bird's eye view of the coast:

The best bit of the coast is south of Perpignan, where the Pyrenées hit the sea giving a more interesting coastline than the miles of sand to the north.

Collioure is pretty but can be hell in high season.

This year there are events in Béziers, just to the north of Narbonne, to "celebrate " 800 years since the massacre of much of the population in the Albegensian Crusades

There is of course Wiki

In the north of Catalunya you should visit Figueras, Rosas, Girona, and Cadaques
