St. Benoir de Sault, any English Friends in the area?

Recommended Posts

I have put an offer in on a property in the St Benoir area, near Argenton, Limosin.

If it goes through, I will be moving out in April 2005, I am an Insurance Broker intending to work 2 weeks in the UK & 2 weeks in France each month.  I would be interested in communicating with any body in the the area.

I have been out 3 times in 2004 house hunting and its a fantastic area.

Any information on Good French Restaurants, Clubs of any kind, Indian restaurants! ( I understand that there are 2, not too far away, Limoges & Chateauroux), friendly drinking establishments!, etc. would be appreciated.

Best regards,

Roger

I live 20km's from St Benoit and you'll find english everywhere. It's a right pain alot of the time. If you go into SuperU you'll find loads of english especially on the weekend, most will start talking to you when they hear english being spoken.

RE eating, theres a new kebab restaurant in Argenton, curry houses in limoges and chateauroux, the chinese in argenton isn't that bad and theres lots of very good french restaurants on the outskirts of St Benoit.

Not lamb like back in uk think it's veal and poultry, although not 100% sure, I never seem to be in Argenton in the early evening when it's open. The La Sou van goes round twice a week to different places, again I've never been there yet.

The kebab houses in Chateauroux aren't too bad at all ;o)

Does every body eat kebabs in France!!!! , that wasn't what I was thinking of, but thanks for the input everybody.

Thanks for the information Me0Wp000, sorry I don't know your name/s.

Suprised to hear that there are so many English in the area. On my travels this year I only came across tourists.

May have a few more questions in the next few days.

Thanks all,

Roger

Why do english come to france and the first thing they want to know is -are their any english here?

surely they do not come to france only to meet up with other english -surely you should be integrating with the local people .-just an observation.

p.s. i do miss fish and chips as fried in the n.e. of england but i am here to start a new life not just change the city where i live to a cheaper home in france.

i try most of the local food and join in to help local community.

Know what you mean Ab but can understand what they are after.

We met an english guy living in France who found us a property up for private sale. Without his assistance we would have struggled even with my fair french. Since then we have never met any english people in our area of france though I know there are a few there. It has never bothered me, and like you said I didnt really want england in france either.

However I was over on my own in October working in the gardens and doing some decorating. After more than a week I stopped to ask someone for directions and he turned out to be english. He was a landscape gardner living in France. It was only afterwards I realised he had been the only english voice, and only english conversation I had had in almost a fortnight and it felt really strange. So it is nice to know if there any english people around, it doesnt mean you have to live in each others laps or only socialise with brits, its sometimes nice to have a choice.

Hi Janetandmartin,

Thanks for the info. on the friendly bar, I will look it up when I get out there, If all goes well with the offer I have put in on the property it would be great to meet up and have a chat.

St Benoir is a lovely village, you must of been into the Hotel De Centre, when I'm out there I spend a lot of time relaxing outside the bar and have stayed there a few times, the daughter of the hotel speaks English and has been very helpfull (she keeps on saying "you have to learn French!")

Hope all goes well on your property completion.

Widnesbob,

I agree with what you said, Its nice to meet up with English people as well as enjoying the french way of Life.

Ab,

I totally agree with integrating in the French way of life, but its nice to meet up with like minded people aiming for the same things and way of life in a different country to your own.

I can not speak French, Yet! So the more friends in an area where you live is very important.

Speak soon all,

Roger...in france (Hopefully)

Ab for excellent fish and chips follow Jamie Olivers recipe, dead simple and just like the chip shops up north

WidnesBob, god your lucky not to have any brits nearby, the St Benoit/Limousin border seems to be filling up with them.

I was talking to the mairie of Mouhet about ADSL, we need 100 people to get it here sooner than 2006 but out of 103 habitants 36 are now english, whereas hubby and I were among the first and the first primary residents. Chaillac is evening running english lessons for the french and 2 nights a week they are full.

Hi Isobel,

Thanks for your reply.

Its a beautiful medieval village and the people are very friendly.

We have finally agreed the price on the property and its been accepted.

I'm hopefully flying out the week after next to pay the deposit on the house and sign the compromis.

My aim is to spend as much time during each month (mainly in the summer) to work on it.

Do you have much work to do on your daughters property?

Best regards

Roger
