Gardian Posted August 19, 2007 Share Posted August 19, 2007 The other day, I had occasion to visit the Mairie with my son and his fiancee re their impending marriage over here.Pre-arranged meeting with M le Maire and the Commune Secretaire (the real power behind the scenes) and we were shown the Salle de something where the wedding procedure will take place.I should explain that the current Maire is a 5'2", 85yo-ish, toothless (but by no means daft) stand-in for the un-frocked (for alleged fraudulent activities) former Maire. Dominating all was a monster 5' x 3' portrait of a smug-looking Jacques Chirac. "When's he coming down?", said another local hanger-on. "Soon - the new pic's on the way", said Mme la Secretaire enthusiastically. "M. Sarkozy will be in place within a week or two".At this, M le Maire uttered the immortal words (and in a heavy Southern accent), "Un chieng". Priceless - it could only happen here.
