There's Still Time for Me to Retrain as .............

.......... a Surgeon. I'd be good at it (well good-ish) and I'm satisfied that there's a social need. I'll explain why.

I had to make a brief visit to the UK last week & travelled TGV / Eurostar via Paris. On the trains and at the stations, I reckon that I was just about the only person not transfixed by their smartphone.

At St Pancras on the return leg, there was a group of about 30 teenagers and every single one of them was staring down at whatever bolt of information lightning they had just received.

When navigating the stations, I had to frequently do a "beep beep" for people who were remorselessly walking head down towards me.

So .............. as a surgeon, I'd specialise in the surgical removal of smartphones with a view to the re-establishment of social skills. I might even get a knighthood for that.

I am absolutely clueless as to why people need constant attention and are so, actually needy these days. Because IF they need constant contact, surely there is a problem.

Work ofcourse is different, because being in touch with colleagues and clients is essential in many jobs, I understand that.

I love 'my' time, and like my own company and do not want or need to speak to friends and family every single day.

And what of people with no mates, how do they feel these days, or is there an app for that too[:-))]

I too would retrain to do this, but I think that the country, France or UK, would be over run with people having mental breakdowns. Still I suppose that we could also retrain to fit straight jackets too[Www]

Sadly, it's not just the youngsters.  Hubby and I usually eat out once a week, on a week day, as it means that we get the chance to talk to each other for a few hours rather than nodding off in front of the telly/whilst reading of an evening.  Whilst we were out last week, an early-retired looking couple were sitting near us and barely exchanged a word to each other for the whole time we were there.  They each sat messing with their phones, occasionally showing each other something on their phone, but I think that the most complex bit of conversation they had was when they decided to get the bill.  Terribly sad.
