I have just been looking of the site Angloinfo.com and have come across a thread under Financial and Legal for the Riviera area. Basicaly the topic of this thread is about properties that are loacted in Zone Red fire risk areas. It goes on to say that new legislation has recently been passed which in a nut shell does not allow you to rebuild a property on the site after a major fire, that if your property is within a Red zone it will practicaly be worthless and you will not be able to sell same.  The thread does not specify which areas are designated as Red zones you would have to contact your local Marie to check. I think this just affects the Var area

Read the thread 17 plus pages at the moment    Makes you think

I very much agree with the red zones. Far to many properties have been built on land which is liable and at risk to fire during the dry summer months. The south of Europe is a tinder box in the summer. Trees and vegetation grow around the houses for shade etc and make combustible fuel for fire. The recent tragic fires in Greece serve as a warning. I managed to survive a wildfire a few years ago and lost almost everything. Living in areas at risk to fire is simply not worth it. Mairies have been very lax in recent years and allowed building in areas where wild fires flare up on average every fire years as the maquis grows and provides the fuel.
