Touring caravan sites

Recommended Posts

Hi, we are planning on moving to France this year and the idea is to sell our house in the UK and tour France in a caravan until we find our dream home (???)

Nice idea but the only problem (apart from living in a caravan with two large dogs for six months or so) is finding a touring caravan site open all year. So, does anyone know of any places that may take a caravan through the winter in southern Brittany, the Vendee or Charrante???

(If you want to make God laugh, Tell him your plans for the future!!)

They're in Bressuire (North Deux-Sevres) which is reasonable placed for Vendee and, at a push, Charente.

English owners Amanda and Robert are extremely helpful and friendly and will do special winter rates for house hunters. We stayed there for 11 weeks in our camper whilst waiting for our conveyancing to go through.

Municipal sites are the ones that usually shut down end of Sept until the following June because of staffing and financial problems that are involved, but private sites are more likely to open especially if the owners depend on it for the income.

Hi, sorry to take so long to reply but we upgraded Zonealarms and everything stopped. So, thanks for the address, it's one of one so far! we are still not sure if buying a caravan is the best way to go or if we should be looking for a gite or house to rent.

We were quite happy with the caravan idea until we started to look for sites open through the winter, we did have a quick look through a Michlin Guide but didn't see anything open in the areas that we were interested in. One problem being that until our house sells we don't know what sort of time scale we are working with, will we be house hunting in the high season or struggling through snow drifts to veiw derelict farms?

As Les pointed out, the car may be a problem if we end up as nomads for the foreseeable future. We have have a Mk1 Shogun and a Seat Ibiza, both  on their last set of tyres, but there's no point in changing for another right hand drive at this stage. The Shogun will will be fine for the caravan in the short term and may live on as a 'project' when we settle, but we are not sure if it would be best to try to find a used LHD in the UK or wait until we get to France, especially if we decide not to go with the caravan.

The house should be on the market in three weeks or so and it would be good to have some sort of plan in place ready for the rush of buyers with their pockets full of cash. So, any relevent ideas, opinions or information would be greatly appreciated... and thanks to all...
