We are renting a gite in Brittany this summer, but because of a heart condition my husband is unable to walk very far. With luggage, etc. for a fortnight's holiday in the back of our car, we certainly wouldn't have room for a mobility scooter as well!! Benjamin Posted January 23, 2008 Share Posted January 23, 2008 We arranged to hire a push wheelchair on a sort of try before you buy basis.Our first port of call was the local chemist who arranged for a company specialising in products for the physically impaired to visit his shop and give us a demonstration. We did actually pay a hire fee but that was because we disappeared off to the UK for four weeks with it.In your circumstances you'll probably have to ask the gite owners if they can help out. So what does he suggest my husband does on holiday? Sit in the garden or the car and miss out on the beauty of Brittany? Or lose even more independence than he has already by beling pushed around in an ordinary wheelchair? To be honest, I find his comments rather offensive!! If your french is not up to it is there anyone else you can ask to contact them, the gite owners perhaps?I think you are more likely to get a push rather than electric, this is because electric ones are so expensive in France. You might have to look at hiring one in the UK, the type that fold up really small to go in the boot. There would be no problem charging it in France, the normal UK to EU adapter will be fine. AnOther Posted January 25, 2008 Share Posted January 25, 2008 I don't see how anything I said could be construed as "taking the mickey" out of anybody nor did I once mention the disabled.It is a fact that in the seaside town I refer to, Clacton if it makes any difference, there are a disportionate number of curmudgeonly folk who ride around on what they seem regard as weapons adopting the mannerisms I describe. Even so my comment was intended in a jocular fashion and I can't help it if you choose to take it personally.I think you need lighten up, grow a thicker skin, and not be so quick to play the disabled/victim card.I hope you find what your looking for and have a pleasant holiday. He was voicing his opinion of a situation in the UK which I have to support. Only last week I was discussing the use of Scooters in a mobility shop, they said that they always show and instruct the users on the way to us them. However, the problem is that people are purchasing cheap models via the internet and Ebay without any instruction on usage and the faster models can travel at 8mph which can cause serious damage to pedestrians at that speed. Pierre ZFP Posted January 25, 2008 Share Posted January 25, 2008 Hi, sorry but I can't give info about Brittany but I know such things as these scooters must be available as in my neck of the woods they are quite popular. A long way from Brittany but at Berck-sur-Mer there are many hospitals for the seriously ill and recovering and many people can be see taking the sea air on the promanade, some in wheelchairs but more and more in electric scooters. My mother was 85 when we purchased an electric scooter off said auction site. It was in New condition and was only being sold because the owner had put on weight and needed a bigger one. It came with full instructions, new batteries and has given my Mum a new lease of life. Maybe the OP could take that route. My Mums scooter cost £260 and was virtually new. Frederick Posted November 14, 2011 Share Posted November 14, 2011 Its a year or so since I was asked by a friend who had just undergone knee replacement if I could assist her in finding a scooter for her to hire in Brittany for her holiday ... I was not able to find one only a wheelchair from a pharmacy . I have banged the drum on this forum in the past about the demand for Gites with disabled access And for them to put their details on holidays for disabled web sites .Given the price that has been quoted to pick one up off Ebay UK . I would have thought advertising having one of them available might help with business ?.. The disabled access mobile home I used to handle the rentals for on a Haven site in the UK provided one for use on the park .in those days it was £2000 a Stirling Bec that did about 8mph and it got used a lot Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Benjamin Posted November 14, 2011 Share Posted November 14, 2011 A bit more info please Frederick.Was the scooter only available to clients hiring the disabled access mobile home or was it available to any Haven customer on site?I'm not in the lettings business but £2000 is quite a lot of money if you only have one adapted gite.There was a couple who had a B & B adapted for handicapped people on the route between Moutiers-les-Mauxfaits and le Champ-St-Pere, so an area with plenty of good access for wheelchair users. Haven could get one in if required I should think not sure if they have them Ours was kept in a locked metal container it just pushed into that we made for it . We got the cleaner to charge it up We advertised the mobile home in the Radar publication and also on web sites that people who required easy access due to mobility problems would be using to find holiday locations I ran it for my Community Service Club We gave some families referred to us a free holiday The object was to send the ones with kids to Haven Littlesea in Weymouth during the school holiday periods ,At reduced rate hire we took mostly retired people at other times .. We try to make the running of it self financing . We had the Stirling Bec for years it gave good service People tend to hire new ones today if they want one and they are delivered to the park ... We have a new pitched roof centrally heated mobile home now a bungalow type with ramp ...
