Travelling from UK to Cipieres in Alpes Maritimes via Reims, Dijon, Lyon, Avignon, Marseille.

Recommended Posts

We are on adventure this August, travelling through the above places in France and staying (eventually) in Cipieres for at least 7 days then returning to the UK travelling back through France.  If anyone has suggestions as to where to visit/stay on the way there/back I would love to hear from you.  Thank you!

[quote user="lacote0_0"]We use (and like) a motel just off the motorway south east of Troyes, about 280 miles from Calais: http://www.le-val-moret.com/.

Around 100 euros bed and breakfast.

Agreed: excellent place and 2 mins off the motorway (yet no noise). Perfectly reasonable restaurant - needs to be because middle-of-nowhere.

Take the time to stop off in Lyon, which is so often passed by in the pele mele dash for the south. Find a hotel in the centre - it'll be entertaining finding it etc, but all part of the fun. Spend a day there if you can.

Orange - nice little town & the Roman theatre is worth a visit.

Avignon - touristy of course, but unmissable. Find restaurant off the main square (they get you in and chuck the food at you!)

Aix & Arles - also unmissable, but our preference for the latter.

We tried the Val de Moret this week on an unexpected run back to UK. We wanted somewhere new, as the hotels we normally use, although perfectly ok, are a fair way off the motorway. It was very comfortable, welcoming, and dinner was fine, all at a reasonable price. We're staying there again next week on the way south.

Thanks chaps,

Jo

Avignon is great as is the Pont Du Gard nearby and is a Roman structure as is the one in nearby Orange. Of course you are then in the Cote du Rhone vineyards. Lots of hotels around Pont du Gard and we stayed at St Pierre Begud or something similar it had a/c which is a bonus at that time of the year. Nearby Uzes Nimes and the like are also worth visiting. For my mind you could spend two weeks basically around Avignon. You might even consider going to the wonderful Sunday market at Isle sur Sourge which must be one of the best for miles.
