nectarine
I was digging amongst some rubbish and disturbed a lot of wasps or bees on the ground and further digging revealed this sort of ball-like nest - in the photo (centre left) is one of the insects with a yellow head and paler body. Can anybody tell me what it is?And also, it seems that I've disturbed it ... will they return? nectarine
sorry, maybe I've missed the answer, but I think it's a bumblebee /// am I right?
chris pp
It is a bumble bee, most likely either Bombus subterraneus or Bombus terrestris. They both, as you can tell from their names, nest underground. You could try putting it back and covering with some very loose soil/small stones to allow access.
