Thank you, Rabbie.  I've declined to apply raw steak on it as per the OH's less than helpful suggestion.  Steak, raw or otherwise, is rarely (pun intended!) found in our house.  And, if I did have some, I'd rather eat it than turn it into some sort of therapeutic eye-patch.

However, arnica gel seems to work well (and I thank the beautiful and kindly Italian girl who gave me a tube on the Compostelle route).

Just thought I'd mention it in case someone else has a black eye and wonders what to put on it.

Also, perhaps a touch of mauve and blue eye-shadow applied to the other eye-lid might match things up a bit?
