Elections

On this subject, I was astonished to learn when talking to a French friend last night just how much power the local councillors have in France. From what she was saying, their influence extends far beyond that of a local councillor in Britain. Correct me if I'm wrong but I got the impression that control of areas such as education and even some aspects of health care provision have been moved from central government to the regions. Whereas in Britain I tend to regard the local elections as being more about ensuring rubbish collection and keeping grass verges cut regularly.

I wonder how she felt about Daddy's latest fine:

"THE French far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen was convicted yesterday of inciting racial hatred by making disparaging remarks against Muslims in a newspaper interview.

A Paris court ordered the National Front leader to pay a 10,000 euro (6,600) fine.

Le Pen, 75, has been convicted of racist or antisemitic comments at least six times."
