[quote user="Clair"]We don't do crackers in France.

I went to a French Christmas party (only non French person there) a couple of nights ago and crackers, with the usual paper hats and silly jokes were in evidence.  Admittedly the party was not in France but it was certainly a French dinner party, with cooking by the French hostess etc.

The 'epicerie anglaise' near me calls them 'diables de noel.'  I don't know whether this is an official or widely known name, but that's what they call them.

Do you know about papillottes? They are chocolates in a foil twist. Inside each one is a wax-paper insert, with printed jokes or questions (cheap, cheerful & very entertaining) or epicurean quotes (the luxury end of the market).

I splashed out on more expensive papillotes last year & was v. disappointed by the epicurean quotes!  I much prefer the ridiculous joke questions in the 'moins cher' versions. [:P]
