BTW I have been gived a book:

  http://www.amazon.co.uk/Neris-Indias-Idiot-proof-India-Knight/dp/067091648X/sr=1-2/qid=1169030338/ref=sr_1_2/026-5102568-6085261?ie=UTF8&s=books

Hey, well done you!!  I'm so glad you've lost 8lbs in two weeks too as I was beginning to feel a bit freaky.  In all my yo-yo dieting years I've never lost that much in such a short time so I'm glad I'm not on my own!  Are you just weighing yourself every two weeks - and not every two hours like me [:$]

I've heard of the South Beach Diet but don't know what it's about - I trust it's nothing to do with Purina Dog food! (I laughed my socks off at that one!).  So, what's the concept?

Basically its low GI but I think it was one of the first GI diets to hit the headlines in the USA. The guy who started it, Dr Agatson (sp) is a heart specialist and thats the reason he formulated it, a healthy eating plan for his cardiac patients, the weight loss was an incidental, but welcome benefit. (and I guess he is now even richer!!)

The first time I did it I lost 56lbs over about 9 months, but sadly some has crept back, mainly because I enjoy a glass of wine !

Like Atkins there is a strict 2 week start, but it is nowhere near as stringent, its just to break bad habits. They also encourage you to have protein snacks between meals. I usually have 1 ounce of low fat cheese (a babybel or Leerdammer lightlife slice) between breakfast and lunch and then I have 15 almonds (yes, I count them [:-))] ) before supper.

As I'm not overly hung up on bread or potatoes it suits me fine !

Hi Russetthouse - how's the book.  I went onto Amazon and looked at the write up and it looks quite good.  Would you recommend it before I dash onto Amazon and buy it.  Actually I might get it from play.com.  It's £1 dearer but I won't have to pay postage if I use my French card.

I think its quite fun - for instance there are pictures of the authors before and at intervals all the way through, even the little figures on the corners of the page get slimmer as you go through. They go through dressing tips to make the most of your body type and lots of other stuff. Its nicely laid out and well presented, its not saying 'you should do this' its saying 'we did this and it worked for us' which is somehow different, they even chronicle the bad days !

It would be a very good book to pick up on a bad diet day !

Sounds like it's a book for me, although OH will probably roll his eyes and say "not another diet book".  I can't help it [:D].  I love books and I need "input".  I went onto Play.com and unfortunately the book is only available to send to addresses in England.  So I guess I'll have to wait until I go back to England.  If I get it from Amazon at £8.99, it's going to cost me at least a fiver to get it sent out here, so I may as well pay full price en Angleterre and bring it back with me.

Funny - I decided to sort out the bookcase on our landing this afternoon and found "The Body Doctor" (rubbish), The South Beach (gave me wind), The F-Plan (even more wind).  I have Paul McKenna's "I Can Make you Slim" but OH who doesn't believe in hypnosis would have a fit if he came in while I was listening to the CD and reading the book.  Oh my - what am I to do.  Still can't complain tho with a 3lb loss last week.  I'll just continue with my Pitta Bread and Tuna for lunches and a "light" dinner.

Wow Lynda, I wish I could loose weight that fast!! I'm afraid I'm a tortoise not a hare![:D] Well I have survived the large chinese buffet meal and have managed to still loose 500g this week! A long way to go yet though. However I have also started to take measurements and have lost 4 1/2 inches so far. Keep smiling. Joy

No change for me this week, although my tummy doesn't seem so bloated.  I've started having pitta bread stuffed with tuna for my lunches and I find I don't get so bloated as I do when I eat the usual french bread.

I chose the goldfish on my "tickrer" as they tend to swim backwards and forward which basically sums up my weight loss.

Couldn't find that book on amazon.fr, play.com won't send it to France (they do with some stuff), and the postage is quite expensive on amazon.co.uk, so I'll try and pick up a copy next time I'm in England by which time I hope to be so slim and sylph like (lol) I won't need it.  I wish.

Well done on your 500g Joy!  I always turn weight lost into 'virtual' blocks of lard.  A 500g block of lard is a serious amount to have as extra on your hips or tum or wherever your weight tends to gather - and think about having to carry it around in your handbag all day, every day!

Must confess I'm feeling very pleased with the way my 'lard' is diminishing.  When I lost 30lbs last year I averaged out at 2lbs per week, some weeks loosing nothing and then having a good loss the next week.  I did an aforementioned spreadsheet then too and I refer to it now just to see how things are going.  It's really interesting and says a lot about a person's state of mind in that when I was at the same weight last year as I am today, I had lost 24lbs and I felt absolutely fantastic - almost Twiggy-esque - albeit that I did have some more weight to loose.  Today, whilst I'm obviously delighted at the 10lbs loss, I still feel 'plump' [:(]  Hey, let's be up-front and talk numbers!  I'm 5' 10" and today I weighed exactly 12 stones.  I know the ticker thingy says that I'm now under the magical bmi of 25 but I still have 14lbs to go.  I reached 12.7lbs last year, in perfect time for a friend's wedding in the UK in October but I think that mentally I didn't actually reach my personal target - perhaps a reason why I put some weight back on?  What absolute rot I'm talking - I put weight on because I enjoyed stuffing my face with butter and bread and cheese and fried everything (I even actually bought a deep fat fryer that was on promo!) and drinking alcohol like there was no tomorrow [:D]  I also stopped doing any form of exercise (see previous post re dogs leg) so what on earth could I expect!

As I've mentioned before, I count calories to loose weight and during this regime I've averaged just short of 1200 per day.  It's very simple logic, which is why I like it so much: If you eat more calories than you use up then you will gain weight.  Or, to put it more positively: If you eat less calories than you use up - even marginally less - then you WILL loose weight. FACT [geek].

With that in mind, and as this is in the foody section, here's my absolute favourite supper dish - and loved by He who is not trying to loose weight so has double the quantity than me.

Cut up chicken breasts and sprinkle with Schwartz Fajitta (sp?) sizzle 'n stir seasoning (brought over by visitors as can't find it here).

Cut up red peppers (I usually do three) and place skin side up very close to hot grill and grill till black.  Place them in sealed plastic bag, to steam, and when cool enough to handle slip off and discard the skin.  Put peppers into a food processor/blender together with Swiss Boulion powder (again brought by friends) or Knorr Aromat and blitz till pulp.  Add water to preferred consistency.

Cook chicken in non-stick frying pan with 1 tspn oil till cooked.

On bed of basmati (or other) rice, spoon chicken, then sauce and top with 15% creme fraiche.

I have 100g rice, 90g cooked chicken, half the sauce and 40g creme fraiche.  A deliciously filling plateful for about 350 cals and I still have cals in the bank for a 150mls glass of red wine (85 cals) - or two! [;-)]

Er, sorry, just realised how much I've been droning on - anyone still awake out there [:$]

Till next week ..

Sounds delicious Lynda! Have you tried the Old El Paso fajita seasoning(in packets)? Think it is very similar to schwartz one and is easily available in Auchan- I love chicken fajitas! I have a slow metabolism and only loose weight slowly. I am eating approx 1400cals a day and trying to do my exercise dvd at least twice a week. Joy

Well done Joy, brilliant result!  You must feel really pleased - and think about 2.1kg as blocks of lard gone [:)]

My result for Week Four: 2lbs loss !!! [:D][:D]

Total Loss: 12lbs - Hurrah ! (edit: originally put 10 - fancy not getting that right!)

I'm really starting to notice the difference now and all my clothes feel so much better.  Had a little 'wobble' during the weekend as my 2lb loss this week actually registered last Thursday.  Suddenly however, on Saturday, the 2lbs were back and I was at last week's weight again.  I know you're not supposed to weigh yourself every day but it keeps me focused - and anyway, I knew that I had not strayed and was maintaining my 1250 cals a day so it would be fine - in the end!  However, going to Paris this weekend for Saturday lunch as daughter's boyfriend is taking her to Paris for a few days for her bithday.  We're getting the TGV and taking them for a special birthday lunch - and calorie counting will definitely not be featuring!!!  Will have to have a few very good days and save up some calories in the bank [:D]

Well done everyone else.

Can't believe another week has gone already! Ok, another 300g loss. Would have been better except for lots of crepes last week! [:$] Well, I had to keep the kids company didn't I? I actually ate more than intended as my husband had a virus and couldn't eat any and I had already bought lots of stuff! Well thats my excuse anyway[:)] Hope you've all been better than me. Joy

Well done Joy!  300g off is better than nothing - and even more betterer than 300g on!  Hang on in there Russethouse, at least you're putting your hands up and recognising where you're going wrong.

As you can see, no change for me this week but completely expected.  The aforementioned Paris trip was brilliant and made even more so by the fact that our daughter's lovely boyfriend proposed to her on her birthday (the Friday), at the top of the Eiffel Tower and down on one knee!  (And this was after a secret phone call made by him to her dad on the Wednesday evening asking for his permission!).  So you can appreciate, we did quite a lot of celebrating on Saturday!

I came across the following when I was having a book sort out.  It's the preface to a dieting book that came free with some magazine or other.  Made me smile ...

Telephone conversation with a Diet Counsellor (DC) and a prospective New Client (NC):

NC: Hello? Is that the diet counsellor?  I hope you can help - I'm desperate!  I've got three stones to lose and it just won't shift.  I've tried every diet going, but nothing works.  I tried not mixing protein and carbohydrate but who can stick to that?  You can't have fish and chips, there's no spag bol or burgers, so what can you eat?  Then I tried that French guy's diet where you can have lots of butter and cream but that didn't work for some reason.  Cabbage soup made me nauseous.  As for the high-protein diet, people backed away because my breath smelt so foul and I couldn't go to the loo.  But at least trying all these diets has taught me lots about nutrition.  For example, I know that you must only eat fruit in the mornings because the enzyme that digests fruit doesn't work after midday ...

DC: Oh really?

NC: of yes, didn't you know that?  Anyway, so i went to Weight Watchers but I ran out of points by lunchtime.  Then I did Slimming World but I accidentally had a hamburger on a green day and I'm colour-blind anyway.  I couldn't work out the Zone diet, I haven't got a Little Black Dress, I read through all the bloody group diets and you can eat more or less the same on all of them so what's the point?  I really don't know what to do!

DC: Have you tried eating less?

NC: What do you mean?

[:D]

Till next week ...

Well done everyone! Russethouse, porridge is great to eat for breakfast! I have it every day, it keeps me full until lunchtime. Just be careful not to make it with milk (unless using allowance) and no sugar[:D]

Thats great news about the proposal Lynda, now you have a wedding to get slim for!!  LOL for the diet story. See you all next week Joy

Well - a bit late - I know - I've been busy honestly.

First congrats to everyone who lost weight this week.

('m 1lb up this week - can't understand that as I have been really good.

Hopefully next week will be better because I am getting lots of exercise.  We started knocking down our "spooky" house yesterday.  I did'nt do much as there were four men chuntering away outside, so I just made some lentil soup for their lunch and did a bit on my family history on the computer.

Today though was a different story.  Had my hair cut by a friend in the morning and then he came over in the afternoon to continue work on the demolition (multi-tasking?).  OH in "pikey" mood and wanting to salvage everything, so I had to shift floorboards, beams, stone, ivy (which really was all that was holding up some walls).  Then we took the scaffold down, so lots of walking backwards and forwards, stacking things in neat piles.  I am so exhausted, filthy dirty, and longing for a good night's sleep.  That in itself is a joke as the cats have figured out how to open the door to upstairs.  I really don't mind them snuggling up, but not when I'm having an early hours "tropical moment".

So, if the weather forecast is wrong, and it doen't rain for the next 9 days, I'll be out there tearing down walls, putting up scaffold, etc and hopefully finding time to go shopping (on my own with my new found driving skills) and then an hour on my French homework.

Whoever said life was dull?

Well, the sun might not have its hat on but I've definitely got a Spring in my step.  Pause for fanfare of trumpets .... I've lost a stone!!!! Hip hip hurrah !!!

To be honest I was sort of hoping for a bit more than a 2lb loss this week, not having lost any last week and this morning the scales (electronic, so no chance of cheating) did say 11.8 but then at the last nano-second went to 11.10!  Hey ho, perhaps bodes well for next week - though we've got a romantic posh nosh do tomorrow night so I'll have to eat wisely - yeh right! [6]

Have a romantic day tomorrow everyone - but I hope you've given the instruction of, "no choclolates, thank you"!!!

Will watch your posts with fingers crossed!
