Doors

Since there is a thread about wooden shutters I thought why not one about doors!! I love doors/doorways... some closed and imagination runs wild as to what is and goes on behind.... some half open timidly inviting you in... and others wide open....

This first one is one side of the very large bronze doors of Notre Dame de Fourvière in Lyon. It towered over me for at least another 3 or 4 metres (étant grande comme 5pieds 6pouces!)

This half open door was at a little restaurant in Lyon known as a bouchon (inded the name of it was 'Le Tire-Bouchon'!). Bouchons are great places to eat! Lovely food and atmosphere, little cafés where silk weavers and workers came to eat their lunch or suppers. Lyon is/was well famous for its silk industry and the birth of the Jacquard loom! invented by a Mr Jacquard).   It has puppets in the window, they are the various characters of Guignol (or a Punch and Judy show) An expression used often by parents in desperation to stop their kids messing about is : Arrête de faire le Guignol!

and this was the door to a narrow passageway between buildings known as a 'traboule' in Lyon.

These are lovely Missy, you've started a good thread.  Thank you for sharing the photos of your trip with us on the other threads too (the magnolia!  [kiss] ).

"Arrête de faire le Guignol!"   That reminds me yesterday in the supermarket it made me laugh inside, a young father was putting things into his trolley and said to his little girl "Arrête de faire ta sotte !"   [:D]

I had to look that up - but now I can use it at school! Thanks for adding to my work vocab!

You beat me to it, Missy!  I was planning to start a similar thread myself.  I loved your photos, by the way!  Here is one of many door photos by my OH taken in our village - the place is full of such wonderful buildings - they simply beg to be taken a photo of!

Our front door, unfortunately it could not be restored but we still have it along with all that other 'useful stuff' that we keep!

best regards
