man-in-loire Posted March 22, 2015 Share Posted March 22, 2015 Hello -I am new to the forum and have come to this thread a few years too late! I am planning to move to my house in Maine et Loire next year. It has a good sized attached barn, and has a woodyard and carpenter round one corner and a winemaker round the other. Of course none of these factors were influential in my deciding to buy it… I will be bringing my lathes with me to occupy the barn - though my oh wants to turn it into a living room extension - unbelievable! I am trying to post a few photos and I can get them to be visible in preview mode but when I post the message it just shows their photobucket url. What I do is to open the photo in photobucket, click on 'IMG' on the right hand site of the page, that does a copy of the file/photo. It is only when I actually post the message that it is just the link that is visible not the photo.Frustrating! I am completely lost too - what did I do to make that happen?.I like your approach - i worked in medical education and we used to use the BFI method a lot (Brute Force and Ignorance). It generally worked quite well. You prob know the old saying: Drs Bury their mistakes, carpenters burn them. It is a great town I agree - a ham and cheese baguette and coffee by the river after a wander round the market on a sunny saturday is a nice treat. Since then, where I go it goes. So easy to carry, so many books on it and even when you pay for books all you need is a WIFI contact and you have a book you want within 69 seconds!!One of the BIG advantages over tablets is that out in bright light it gets even easier to read, no reflection, just like a paper book but you can read it so easily and turn pages one handed without even having to put yer drink down [8-|] [B][:-))]SWMBO got one, a PaperWhite, the back lit jobbie, and loves it. Mine is the original Touch. I may well get the PW too?To get back on thread. Today I did a great tidy in my workshop after a bit of joinery, not normal for me, so that I can get back at my lathe, so if a bit of wood comes flying past you at 2,000rpm it probably isn't a flying saucer, but it might be on the way to being a plate or a shallow bowl??? I need to tidy my workshop too as the bench is piled high with tools brought home from my last visit to my retreat. I recently invested in a mini lathe for smaller work and have been making a little desk clock on it. it is very quiet and quite smooth (variable speed) but you need to be gentle with the cuts as it is easy to dig in and slow it down. Keeping the chisels sharp helps! Also just replaced the drive belt on my axminster lathe and finished a bowl in burred oak on it which i want to sell but the OH refuses to see it go. In the uk I live just a few miles from a woodturning supplier called Peter Childs who are brilliant for equipment and advice. I would miss them a lot if I do move over to france. No reason to worry about missing contact with them. They were very helpful when I phoned them. Just as well I don't live near them though [:-))]My lathe is a Record CL1, the 'baby' of the series, but not so babyish as it used to be. I have fitted a 3ø motor and speed controller and it changed it so very much. The head swings to let me turn as big as I dare and so far that's the top of the 18" diameter lazy Susan I did. And I have turned small with it too.
