laurel hedging

Autumn is best as the ground is still warm and encourages root growth.

Spring is fine too but bushes and trees planted in autumn will have a head start compared with those planted in the following spring, as they'll already be semi-established when the ones planted later will still be settling down.

I planted some in 2004 and they looked like they were about to die off for the first few months but they are now so big I'm planning a major trim next month...

As Clair says Autumn is the best time, I would guess mid to late September so the days aren't too hot or the ground too dry.

But beware laurel can shoot up and go a bit wild as we discovered!! But it does attract a lot of wild life with several varieties of birds nesting in our outer boundary hedge. Make sure you plant them at least 1.5-2 metres away from your boundary, which makes trimming easier later on once it is established, I think this might be a legal requirement..

Regards

Steve
