Lynn Kitson
This is our first year as gite owners. We are using our house for the gite and I am not sure about the insurance. Is our own building/content insurance sufficient if the house is used by paying guests? Any advice please.
Clair
Hi LynnkYou need to contact you house insurer to let them know you are renting out, if only for what is called responsabilité civile. There will be a slight increase on the premium.Make sure you understand what is and isn't covered by your insurance and what the guests' insurance covers. In France, most (all?) house insurance covers have a villégiature section, which extends the guests' cover to a rented property. It is your responsibility to ensure the guests' cover has that option. After all, it is your property you want to protect [:)]
alnmike
Clair is spot on. With our rentals we have in our T's & C's that guests must have their own liability insurance as whilst our insurers would pay for incidents, they would seek to recover their costs from the guest if they caused the incident.
