Another post on CPAM, CMU and Cartes Vitales

Recommended Posts

I know this is a bit late but, out E106 ran out today, tomorrow I am going to phone and try to extend it.  Is it possible to apply to the CMU by internet or post, the reason being (and why this problem had slipped slightly) is that we are in England at the moment and have been since the end of October, we are returning to France in mid March, unless we have to return earlier.  I think we thought like others, that there would be a letter from the CPAM telling us that we were about to be left without healthcare, but of course this has not arrived.

I do have type 2 diabetes, so am hoping that CPU will take me on, but I am not sure if the fact that we have signed on to the French tax system and we do run a gite counts as being active.  The other thought is that as my wife is 60 in October we might manage till then......?

Peter, If you can extend your E106 you won't need the CMU, you will get state healthcare from the régime génerale as you did until today. Phone the CLEISS english-speaking helpline 08 20 90 42 12 (unless your french is good in which case phone your CPAM) and yes, you can do it all by post, CLEISS will tell you what you need to send, to where.

If you can't extend your E106 or get any other E form cover, then you may be able to get CMU cover as a result of an accident de vie if your diabetes developed since beoming resident in France. See the www.frenchhealthissues website for some sample letters on how to do this. If you already had diabetes before you moved, you're in more of a grey area, since the French haven't made it clear exactly what constitutes an accident de vie, but this shouldn't prevent you from trying.

However if you have a registered business, this alone should qualify you for  french healthcare without needing CMU (in fact you wouldn't qualify for CMU at all if this is the case) but you would be put into one of the other health regimes relevant to your business registration category instead. Good luck!

I think you will find that the above 0820 number is the English helpline run by the CPAM de la Manche in Saint-Lo (dept 50 - though it will accept calls from those in any part of France) and which has been said to be as uninformed as any of the CPAM offices about the exact situation. The number for CLEISS (Centre des Liaisons Européennes et Internationales de Sécurité Sociale) is 01 45 26 33 41, though I have never phoned it and do not know how good or otherwise the service is.

Thanks for the clarification on the numbers Will. I obviously got them muddled up. I've used both on different occasions and they seemed to be okay at the time, though I haven't called recently re any of the current issues!

Thanks again.
