Anyone else on Warfarin (anti-coagulant) needing regular blood tests?

Hi

I am moving to France and well there is a list as long as my arm of questions, but from a health perspective I wondered what the situation is re anti-coagulant clinics in France. I need to go at least fortnightly to have my blood tested and the Warfarin dose monitored. As I plan to travel along the West coast from St Malo to Bordeau, I am wondering how easy or difficult it will be to find anti-coag clinics to get my INR level read.

Any one got any ideas?

Many thanks
P.S. Ideas on how to select the right place to live would be much appreciated too. Myself, hubby and baby are moving in April and are thinking along the B&B lines and estate agency. I am pretty fluent in French. Thanks.

Not difficult at all. Before we moved permanently we just looked for a nurses clinic (this was in Valencay) explained we were on holiday, and she took the sample, asked which chemist we wanted to pick up the result from, and charged us about 3 or 4 euros. The next day the result was at the chemist, and we had to pay there too, about 15 euros I think. You can also go direct to the laboratoire if you prefer, as they have technicians there for taking blood, and they post the result to you or you can pick it up the next day. Now we are permanent residents the doctor gives us an ordonnance type thing, which lasts for 6 months tests. We don't pay anything now as my husband has 100% cover for anything related to his long term condition. The nurse takes the blood or we go along to the laboratoire, as before. Hope that helps!

Blood tests are easily done, as mentioned.

Be aware though that using Warfarin is not very common in France: French doctors tend to prescribe another similar drug. Warfarin is commercialised in France but it will probably have to be ordered by most chemists, unless you happen on one who has a regular customer for it. Delivery should take under 24 hours to any chemist in France. It is very cheap medecine.

I spent several hours hunting for Warfarin one Saturday night for a visitor who had forgotten to bring her supply.
