Hearing tests and aids

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I couldn't get any results by searching:
Having at last persuaded TOH that I do NOT mumble (!), he wants to go to have his hearing checked. Do we start with our GP, or just go straight to one of these firms that keep stuffing junk advertising in our box. (Am always worried that they would have a vested interest in selling us an expensive hearing aid that might not be necessary.)
Anyone got any useful advice?
TIA
Chrissie

My son had an accident with a cottom bud in his ear two years ago and was sent after the initial doctor's visit to the ORL dept at the local clinic where he was given a good check over with various machines and an audio test in a soudproof cabin which did reveal some deafness in the damaged eardrum. He then had to go back one year later, appointment made a few weeks before direct with the ORL reception and had made improvements which means he dosn't need to go again unless hearing problems crop up and it will be back to the doctor to start the ball rolling again. Like the UK your local doctor is the first port of call as they have all the specialist details and can often make the appointment for you.
