Satellite switch off?

Recommended Posts

Recently whilst helping neighbours they said they had lost their satellite signal. Now normally this can be attributed to dish having moved, lose connections etc etc. However in this case the dish was sheltered not obscured and well fitted. It appears that the UK channels disappeared last Tuesday (gradually they say). Now the strange thing is that normally to receive UK transmittions from the Astra 2 cluster the dish points at 'about ' the suns position at 11am (well here it does), however this dish was pointing at suns position at 'about' 2pm or maybe 3 pm. Does anyone know of satellites carrying UK transmittions that have been switched off recently or anything else which could account for this. All usual 'receiver' things have been checked.

No,   nothing has "moved" that would cause a loss of programmes like this,   apart possibly from the dish (whatever your neighbours say!).

You are indeed correct,    if they are receiving British "domestic" TV (ie BBC/ITV etc channels) via a satellite then their dish would be pointing SE/SSE ish.    A dish pointing at the sun at 2.00 pm sounds more like an Atlantic Bird 3 dish for French TV (Fransat now).

So is there a second dish they haven't "discovered" elsewhere on the house?

Most odd.  Sounds like possibly a power supply that's failed on their sat receiver....   Is it a Sky box or a freesat box or a bog standard free-to-air box?   Any on screen messages?
