Towing

Is it against the law in France to tow a broken-down vehicle with a tow

rope? We did this yesterday and according to some were very lucky not

to have met any gendarmes. If so a golden opportunity lost for those

forum members who feel they must inform on law-breakers! Pat.

There is some sort of law about this and if my memory serves me right it's basically as follows.

You must use a rigid towing pole, they have a built in spring for a bit of cushioning, and I think the speed limit is 30kph. To be quite honest with the ridged pole I had to use any faster would have been a nightmare. Like the UK you can't tow on motorways.

I am sure that if I am wrong somebody will correct me.

Nothing to do with the legality in France or UK but this topic brought back some memories.....

.....of being towed from Oxford to Surrey. The person towing me set off so fast that the tow rope snapped so for the second attempt, which was successful, it was on the longest part of the broken tow rope.

We came down the M40 at speeds betwen 70 and 80mph [:O](bear in mind on the shortened tow rope) so I was very close to his car. What an experience.

The occupation of the person towing me - police officer[^o)]

Benjamin - you could try it. Let me know if it works as I have several

bits of info on the illegalities of others and could maybe try the same

thing. Also on husbands fine of 90 euros the morning of  the same

day for not wearing his seatbelt. P. - that is a frightening thought,

just imagining it. Motoring experiences were more exciting in the old

days. I remember driving home a large van husband had just bought and

realising that the brakes didn't work at all, so had to go down through

the gears plus handbrake to slow down and stop. Pat.
