Size of Van?

I've tried a couple of searches with no luck.  Does anyone know how big a van one can hire and drive on an ordinary driving license in France?  We'd be using it for a house move to the UK.  Just wondering if there's a difference between France and the UK with regard to this.  If we can hire a bigger van here in France for our removal, we'll take our stuff over and then come back for our car.  If not, we'll probably drive up, hire a van, and come back for our stuff.  Any info, advice, etc. welcome.

If your licence is category B then you may drive a vehicle up to 3,500kg gross weight (PTAC).  If you passed your UK test before January 1997, then you will also have category C1 (light trucks up to 7,500kg).

French licences currently do not have a category C1 - instead, they issue a full category C truck licence but with a separate restriction code for the 7,500kg. Whereas 7,500kg trucks are easily hired in the UK, I understand they are less commonly available for hire in France because, unlike the UK, French category C licences are subject to passing a test and holders are subject to periodic medical tests for this class of vehicle, therefore it's not a popular option.
