All income has to be declared - private and government pensions incuded and then the private pension - subject to earnings could be subject to tax. That was the situation last year and I don't know if there will be any changes this year.

This is not really an oddity but written into the double tax agreement. British people in France and French people in Britain who receive a pension paid from government sources (civil servants, armed forces, teachers, local government workers and so on - a very large goup) pay tax at source.
